... road?

According to askMID, the oldest of my previous cars which is still insured is my first Focus which is now 14 years old.

None.

The last one we sold to a scrappy. The one before that, a 1989/F Pug205D, lasted a couple of years after we sold it in 2000.

For last 20 years I've run cars into the ground so not really surprising.

Check here to see whether it still exists, either taxed or SORNed:

All you need is the registration number and make.

Reported seeing our old MB E300 Diesel a few weeks ago, saw it again last week, still looks good, that car should go on almost indefinately, its 18 years old now.

Our E320 estate is still running round, thats 19 years old now.

Our Volvo 940 td estate is 20 and is still in use by my Sis and her hubby, it refuses to break down or rust despite all the abuse and little care they give it, including jump starting her Volvo artic regularly, even the 24v surge when that starts doesn't affect the car, they really do not make them like that any more, if they still made them and with the VW LT van 6 pot Diesel in it i'd buy a new one tomorrow.

Hilux and C2 much newer and still on the road.

Ignoring my first two cars (the only two I've owned actually owned myself but the youngest was a 1989 one!) then:

- Astra M plate = Not on MID
- Vectra N plate = Not on MID
- Vectra P plate = Not on MID (it was until recently)
- Golf GTI T plate = Stolen in 1990... so not unless it has a cloned ID
- Passat W plate (2000) = On MID as insured
- Mondeo 53 plate = On MID as insured
- Mazda6 57 plate = On MID as insured

Scenic 04 plate - yes
Scenic 51 plate - liability due 01/04/13 so borderline.......
Scenic T plate - not found
Previous 2 cars not found so assume the rest are dead as well.

Still no sign of the missus's written off Beetle being re registered either.

My first car, a 1954 Triumph Mayflower, was scrapped by the friend I sold it to in 1969 when he emigrated and couldn't find a buyer.

My second, a 1947 Triumph Roadster, is still registered.

My 1961 landrover doesn't exist, but my 1972 V8 conversion is on SORN.

Amazingly, my 1970 Renault 4 is still taxed, but I know that it underwent a rather dodgy cut and shut identity change because I happened to see it about 10 years ago.

My 1974 Triumph Stag is now in near-concours condition, owned by my brother-in-law.

The 1989 spare Volvo 240, which I bought for £100 about 8 years ago and sold for £300 in 2011 is still taxed.

Another Triumph and a Volvo I scrapped, but kept all the parts, so they live on in spirit.

My old Focus is still running, or at least taxed anyway. Most of my cars were fit for nothing when I got rid, so went for scrap shortly after I traded them in.

Saw my old P reg red Megane 1.4 RN on the M20 yesterday. Was in good nick when I sold it in 2000. Doesn't look like its long for this world now though.

A lot of mine are still going, though amusingly the newest is not:

1999 Golf GTI 1.8T - Still on MID (must be well over 160k on it now)
2001 Volvo S60 - Still on MID (as above re mileage)
2000 Mondeo 1.8TD - exported to Poland (again, re mileage if it's still working)
2004 Renault Grand Scenic - Not on MID (no shock there - it was falling to bits in 2008)
1998 Fiesta 1.4 Zetec -still on MID
2000 Mazda MX-5 - still on MID
2000 Fiesta Zetec-S - not on MID
1999 Peugeot 306 D-Turbo - not on MID

My cars:-

1995 Fiesta MK3.5 - I sold it for with 9 months MOT as the piston rings had gone. One day it wouldn't start, every so month or so it would have a day where it conk out at the end of my road, and then wouldn't start. I found by trying to turn it over with the air filter off I could eventually get it going.

I sold it to a trader for £50 when I could no longer get it going, he collected the car he seems to think it was the carberretor (odd as it was fuel injected). I didn't let on that I knew it was burning a litre of oil per 100 miles and that it smoked like a steam train. And then it only got through the MOT because I put a load of stop smoke in it. Anyway amazing it re-appeared on MID two months later. Then three months later, it had been scrapped, I feel guilty as I suspect the trader resold the car, by that point it would have had 12 previous owners!

1996 Fiesta M4 - Kept it for a few weeks realised it was a rust bucket, sold it to somebody on ebay, was very honest about the condition. Somebody found a link for a free HPI test, so noticing it was no longer on MID, I checked it out, turns out it was a Cat B. The person I sold it to must have had a nasty crash in it.

1999 Corsa - Sold it when the head gasket went to a trader, this car is still on the road and is taxed till September 2013. It will be a good car as I had replaced just about everything on it!

Most my dads cars were scrapped when he got rid of them, apart from the Punto which he wrote off, that was a Cat C, that ended back on the road for a couple of years.

My 2002 Mondy seems to be alive and well, 1999 Audi A4 B5 appears to be deceased RIP. Both 1996 Vectras are rotting in hell - oh how I wish I could have crushed them. 1997 Micra station car appears to be still breathing though, bless it.

Isn't it time you let him in, Z?

I've corrected the link in Cliff's post now.

Good grief. The first car I owned is still alive somewhere. A 1971 J-reg Ford Escort 1.1 Deluxe. DVLA says it's current status is SORN not due, date of liability 1/5/2014.

It's out there in a barn somewhere. I'm staggered. I also want it back. ;-)

I owned it in 1987/88, it was going strong when I sold it to a cousin, one who I haven't spoken to in decades now, but I know she only kept it a few months before selling it. I wonder what it's been up to all this time?

the shell has been used for building a rally car probably.

Great great cars those Mk1 Escorts. All of them, all the flavours.

As I have a memory like something with a very good memory, I can recall all the number plates of the 31 cars (including the current 2) which have been through my hands (I include all those the wife and I have had sine we started co-habiting in 1997).

Of the 29 previously owned, one is SORN (the Mk 1 Escort). Amazingly (or not, according to your opinion on Renaults), the most recently deceased is the E reg Renault 9 1.2TS. This died in 2005, aged 18. It lived the second longest life in my list, after the Beetle 1303, which apparently got resprayed pink at some stage and lived for 26 years.

Other than that, the following are all now seemingly dead (age at time of death in brackets): FIAT 127 Sport (16), FIAT Regata (10), Citroen 2CV (16), MG Metro (5 - I killed it rolling it off the M40 ;-(), Ford Orion (14), Citroen GSA (11), Alfa 33 (10), Peugeot 309 (11), Volvo 360 (14), Volvo 480 (15), another Alfa 33 (10), FIAT Ulysse (11), SEAT Ibiza (6).

Two vehicles were not found in the DVLA database, an MG Midget and a MkIV Escort. I know I've got the numbers right, so don't know what's happened to them.

In the land of the living, and so to answer the original question posed here, are 10 cars - current ages in brackets: A SEAT Ibiza (10), 2x VW Tourans (9 and 5), SEAT Toledo (9), Mazda 6 (8), FIAT Stilo (8), Smart Roadster (8), Volvo 360 (27 - OK, that one was exported to Holland in January, I presume it's still alive as I sold it in mint condition), Ford Galaxy (10) and - big surprise here due to its history - a 1998 Ford Mondeo 1.8LX (15). I did 100k in that, sold it to my sister, and her husband drove it in to a tree. I presumed it got crushed after that, but it's back on the road, and is currently taxed.

So there you have it. If you remove the Beetle wildcard, FIATS, Citroens, Renaults and Volvo 360s are the longest lived vehicles! ;-)

Sorry, ballsed up on the 127 Sport, that one only survived to 12. Scratch FIAT from the list of longest surviving marques. :-(
