For anyone who doesn't live around here, but travels through the area, you may wish to be apprised of the following:

With your missus rushing around the place, i am not surprised there is a crackdown. She s a one woman crime wave.

>>Twyford, Charvil, Wargrave, Sonning, Ruscombe, Hurst and Remenham
I am sure that those were all known spots for speeding in the 70s & early 80s.

The publication of the story's probably more effective than BIBs policing it.
IIRC the majority of speeders are local.

Drift Road is where it was at in my day.

Out towards Cranbourne?
Out of my area, I was more the Caversham / Nettlebed / Henley triangle.
|
That's it. I was Windsor/Winkfield based as a yoot.
I love that run down in to Henley from Nettlebed - that wide bit of road at Bix, and the subsequent bit right on the edge of Henley, was that built in prep for an M4 junction which never materialised?

Whats this, some kind of Berkshire luv-in? You two kiss behind the bike sheds or wot?
|
You Surreyists just stay the other side of the Runneymede Rubicon, there's good fellows. Staines is nice this time of year, I hear.
ETA: Although Caversham/Nettlebed/Henley is (or in the case of Caversham, was) in Orcsfordshire, so not really God's County. I live in that bit of Berkshire which was once Orcsfordshire, but was liberated in 1974.

Thats Staines upon Thames to you northern bums.

>> Staines upon Thames
I delivered a car there today. Up and coming area.

They think, it will take more than adding upon Thames to do that.

You got one of those frowny things. Now I was quite flattered that you'd think I could get kissed behind the sheds so I didn't give it to you. I bet Alanovic was flattered you thought I'd kiss him, so it probably wasn't him.
So I assume that someone wants to kiss either Alonovic or I (or both, I guess) and is resentful that they have no chance of achieving that goal?
|

Wasn't me, you're right. And now I would like a bottle of that mind bleach so oft mentioned in this parish.

The last bit is the Fairmile. Lying flat on the tank of a KH250 I swear it could do over 100mph.
Although to be fair the wind and vibration was so much that you couldn't really see the speedo, whether or not it was accurate.
Used to go the pub at Bix, was it the Fox? No clue if its still there or not.

speedlimit hell now and more than the odd camera

There is a road between Stoke Row and Cane End which has a particular corner. That particular corner we used to try and get around as fast as we could, bear in mind that we're talking MkI Escorts, MKII Cortinas, Minis and the like and idiot teenagers..
It used to be a 60mph road (or at least, NSL). It is now a 40mph road. I was there a little while ago bemoaning the fact that there is 40mph limit whereas before there wasn't/ When it occurred to me that "before" we were suicidally lucky if we could get around it at 45mph, whereas now I was going around it at 75mph in an SUV.
That's why they never had speed limits, because most stuff couldn't go that fast anyway. Whereas now, everything can.
Mind you in those days we weren't worried about cameras, but we did know every farm track, layby or entrance way one might find a panda car parked - and *they* had MKII Escorts!!
|
Indeed. There's a sweeping corner near where I grew up on a 60mph section of A road which I clearly remember deeply unsuccessfully, though thankfully not catastrophically, trying to negotiate at 45mph in my crossply remould shod Wolseley Hornet. The same bend in a modern car seems tame even at the speed limit.

Thanks for the warning, Alanovic. I'm church organist at Sonning so this is very much my patch. I try not to speed but there are some long 30 mph stretches round Twyford so one has to concentrate.
Just at the Henley end of the Fairmile there is a speed camera to trap the unwary who haven't slowed down enough after the long straight stretch. Last year Oxfordshire's cameras were all out of action, but I think they've resurrected them.
