Looking down my list of jobs the other day which were mostly car-related, Mrs H popped the question that every bloke should love to hear; should I be thinking about a new car? Now I know Mrs H has a legacy from her parents on its way but I do not yet (if I ever will) know how much. I don't need a car as big as my 8-year-old Citroen C8 until we put the caravan on the back. I could easily commute to swim teaching and coaching on the motor-bike or bicycle, and cycle training only demands that I have a car big enough to have a bike rack on the back to do a 30-mile round trip. I'd have to find an eye-watering amount of money to buy anything big enough to tow with, and the car's only done 60K miles; it's had the DPF stuff done and a recent cambelt and water pump. The tyres are new, the brakes won't need attention for a while and the battery's just been replaced under warranty. I'm very comfortable in it but a bit bored with the thing. We are in the middle of building a house for which we need every last cent of our savings and projected income. Within 15 minutes, like a complete idiot, I had talked myself out of a new car.
Assuming that the caravan stays, what should I have said?

"What have you got in mind, dear?"...........and then kept quiet.

''I'll leave the decision to you''
She would have then felt guilty saying anything but yes.

I'd hang on hawkeye. I reckon we're in the middle of the shift. EU Governments have introduced draconian measures against the motor manufacturers and it will be interesting to see what the car companies come back with.
You've got a car at the moment which fulfils all your needs, why change ? You'll only be throwing 20% at the politicians to waste on another pet project.
How often do you use the caravan ? If you must change, get something which runs on fumes, costs £0 to tax and hire a car to tow when you need it.

Simple really - how much have we got to spend.

Agree with Gmac, keep the present motor.

As above...yes keep it.
It seems to do everything you want and is a known quantity. Plus your ongoing building project with potential unknowns.
I too am 'bored' with my car. Three years is just about the longest I ever keep a car. I used to buy and sell privately ever 6 months, but my current car fulfills all my criteria and is not boring to drive. Typical 'grass is always greener' scenario so looks like I shall keep it a while longer.

I do that most days. It's like many other things - if it's easy it's no fun.
