Thinking of driving leaving Friday 15th February rather than fly and hire for the flexibilty it gives us on the journeys, saves in inflated half term costs for 3 flights, hire car and split over 2 days looks fairly easy.

It'll take us 2 hours to get to the tunnel plus an hour of queuing and crossing so when we get to Calais we'll be 3 hours into it and I wouldn't want to try and do most of the rest on day one so Frankfurt looks half way distance wise between Calais and Salzburg. If there was somewhere nice someone recommended a bit further on we'd do that.

Never driven in Belgium, Germany or Austria so would appreciate any advice including the likelihood of having a trouble free, fairly brisk journey over the UK half term. I guess the last part of the journey up to the resort will be fairly slow. I've got 3peak/snowflake proper winter tyres on with part time or low speed full time 4wd. Will I need to rent/buy snow chains as well?

Thanks

Whereabouts are you actually going to? I live near Salzburg so I might be able to provide some more on-the-spot info.

Thanks for your offer, we're going to Katschberg :-)

Re. the crossing timings - don't forget you lose an hour between England and France.

The Brussels ring (I assume you're going that way?) is never nice, especially on half-term weekend, which I believe co-incides with most of Europe this year!

I doubt you'll need chains with winters on a 4x4.

This link gives the petrol and diesel prices in Europe, correct at today's date.

Sorry about the late reply, I'm actually in the UK following a family emergency.

The Katschberg is one of the first places in the area for HGVs to need chains, less frequently cars. I would definitely hire chains. The main roads are normally cleared pretty quickly, but when a lot of white stuff comes down very fast it's impossible. I'm guessing that the Katschberg is pretty high and will get a lot of weather if it comes, so is particularly difficult to clear. I'm guessing there is/will be a fair bit of snow around, as we live around 500 metres altitude & are surrounded by green fields due to recent heavy rain, but I'm told by SWMBO that there has been snow on the mountains, and a fair bit.

This link has a forecast up to 8 days ahead, you can keep an eye on it - looks pretty cold in the near future!

You're wisely not being too ambitious with your travel plans in terms of covering the distance, trying to push on to meet a daily mileage target is unnecesary pressure when the weather is unpredictable.

HTH.
