Previously exempted cars will now be charged as CO2 emission limit is changed from 100 to 75 g/km

Not surprised, govt. will do anything to raise tax.

"Here's the problem if you keep raising tax rates: You slow down economic growth".
~ Paul Ryan.

How very apt!

You are as bad as the Daily Mail . (take that as a deadly insult :-)

TFL are responsible for the Congestion Charge in London....Nothing to do with nay Government.

Please keep up! :-)

Not surprised. The decision to exempt these vehicles was irrational from the word go.

It's either a congestion charge or an emissions charge. It cannot be both.

It can be anything they want it to be, the ever mobile goalposts.

Its worked, we've hardly been near the place since congestion charge went on, result all round then.

Fortunately few if any food factories or silo's within (or slightly without) the zone so don't have to go there for work either, double result.

M25 is as close as i want to get to it.

CC = Con Charge a.k.a. stealth tax #37

Nothing to do with pollution, congestion, environment, global warming/cooling etc.

:-)

I'm not sure if this still applies, but I know an 11-seater long wheelbase Landrover could be registered as exempt from the CC because it was classed as a bus. So a polluting, large vehicle was (and maybe still is) exempt but a small efficient car was not. Madness.

As somebody working in London but using public transport, foot or bike to get around I regard the CC as a great success.

Vehicles with more than nine or more seats can apply for a 100% exemption. This seems to be as a 'bus by analogy'. If it's a congestion charge allowing discounts for high capacity vehicles is entirely rational. It's about getting traffic off the road; emissions are neither here nor there. You'd have to be a certain species of masochist to prefer a LWB Landy in London to a manouverable, parkable and economical small car eneb if subject to the CC.

IIRC the exemption for electric vehicles created a massive surge in demand for park and charge spaces as city workers supplemented their Beemers with electric carriages.

The other exemption that needs looking at is Private Hire vehicles. Exemption, if provided at all, should only apply to those engaged on proper hire/reward minicabbing. Too many of the current exempt vehicles are company limos.

The other exemption which I have had a couple of times is to arrive in the office by 0700 and leave after 1800. Working on London based projects, parking at the office & underground / taxi to the client.
Traffic much quieter at that time in the morning as well.

2 year old report says many governments are refusing to pay as they see it to be a "Direct Tax" from which, as foreign diplomats, they are exempt.

Bit like the Dartford Crossing toll charge which once it had achieved its target of paying for the construction costs morphed into a congestion charge which we now pay due to the congestion on the crossing caused by everyone stopping to pay the congestion charge. This is now to increase in stages to pay for a system which will do away with the need to stop to pay the charge and will be trumpeted as the charge being justified as it will have solved the congestion problem caused by the charge in the first place.......

Brilliant Cockle, that could have been taken straight from a script for Yes Minister, they'll be head hunting you at Spin Central coming up with smoothies like that.

Sadly, GB, Yes Minister, although it may have been very true to life according to some, was funny however the Dartford charge is no laughing matter, not in Essex and Kent anyway....
