I predict a few lorry-on-lorry events.

I wonder if the proximity alone would actually prevent a lorry so equipped from doing the usual nose to tail convoy routine?

A flashing red light and a buzzer gets annoying after a while!

Where's my toffee hammer, that usually cures it;)

Essential part of the toolkit for any discerning lorry driver.

Talk about cutting it fine!

Who's going to test it in the wet though?

Cyclists use toffee hammers too Pat. Just the job for tapping spokes to check they've all got same tension.

Then try and explain a toffee hammer to an American on the folder users forum

Cyclists probably use them to take car mirrors out!

Try explaining why you've got a toffee hammer to the BIBs when they stop and search you.

They're just the tool for breaking the side windows of cars when the scrotes spot something they want inside, or so I understand.

It normally lives in the garage with things like bottom bracket and headset tools that don't go on runs. On a long tour it'd be part of a kit of tools stored together in one pannier.

So who has to tidy up the back of the lorry afterwards?
 Tailgaters Beware! - Old Navy
Or extract the load from the back of the drivers head.
 Tailgaters Beware! - Pat
I have spent the last two days writing a course on securing loads....and I haven't finished it yet.

I have to teach it on Friday to a very gobby audience of guys I worked alongside of for 15 years and they will soon tell me if it's wrong:)

ON...all loads should be secured sufficiently so they won't move under any circumstances...kinetic energy and all that!

So glad you put a "should" in there Pat. :-)

I shall remind them it's the law.
I shall remind them of the damage a shed load can cause.
I shall remind them of the impact on the customer.

They won't take any notice at all.

Then I shall tell them that VOSA will ask to look and see if the load is secured and if it isn't they will get a Graduated Fixed Penalty...that always does the trick!

The possibility of getting several tons of anything in the back of my neck would be enough incentive for me. :-)

Always used to love it in Safeway when a wagon pulled up, lifted its door and the 22 pallets were merged into one!

For some reason the household pallets were always the worst.

Shifting loads can have consequences beyond the road.

The Rail Accident Investigators published a report yesterday into a freight train derailment at Reading. The cause was a load inside a freight container which had displaced during road transport to the freight railhead. Being off centre it meant the train was derailed by a minor track defect.

As it re-railed on subsequent points it took a little time to locate the train and bring it to a halt

Pat might find that a useful illustration!!

That's interesting Bromp, thanks a lot for posting that.

It will make a good discussion and illustration point.

Containers are always a problem for lorry drivers because the actual sealed container in the load, not what ia in it.

This means they have no jurisdiction on how it's loaded or secured and don't even see it as they are sealed by the customer loading them.
