Some of them are quite nice actually.

...Some of them are quite nice actually...

Agreed.

No harm in buying a mainstream 'limited edition' provided you accept it will be worth the same, or slightly less, than the rough equivalent brochure model when it's a few years old.

Shameful special edition cars - Zero
Yes some of them are really nice.

I nearly ordered a C4 Loeb last time out, it was loaded with toys. I like the 500 pink, and someone down my road has an immaculate looking Seicento Sporting in Bright yellow, Its a little stunner.
Shameful special edition cars - Armel Coussine
One or two quite good-looking motors among the dogs (no offence Perro). But the only really amusing one isn't one of those, it's the pinky-purple flake Fiat 500 Barbie. It would have to have full Abarth essesse tweaking though, preferably without showing it except to the very observant.

Edit: heh heh, great minds think alike up to a point...

I saw one of them Polos in Berlin, I have a picture of it some where.

My grands Lada has to be most shameful special edition. It was a 1200L special edition on an 85C.

It had leapord skin seat covers, a Fiat racing steering wheel, a cut out sunroof and a Goodmans radio cassete unit with stereo speakers in the door cards. It was mustard colour with lots of gold stripes on the side saying special edition. I seem to remember rather unusualy for a 1985 car it had a third brake light too.

Vauxhall did a special line of Antibes I seem to recall.

I often wonder how the people of Antibes felt about this though I suspect not many saw them.

I can't believe that multi coloured Polo was actually marketed,
who on earth would want a car like that I wonder,
Obviously I've come across a few cars with read lead seals, grey wings & black bonnets,
I even had an old mid blue 320 once, put 2 new black primered wings on it and never got around to spraying them.
Shameful special edition cars - Zero
I dont suppose many Antibes drivers really knew where it was either.,
Shameful special edition cars - spamcan61
There's a Polo Harlequin still being used as a daily driver in the Farnborough area; at least if you want a body panel from the breakers colour matching shouldn't be a problem.

My mate bought an Astra Antibes when they came out; so 'special' it didn't even have a clock!
Shameful special edition cars - Runfer D'Hills
There was once a fashion for naming cars or sub models after British places. Off the top of my head I can think of Westminster, Cambridge, Cowley and Oxford. I'm sure their would have been plenty of others.

Then came Cortinas, Capris etc. A trend which continues using the assumed glamour of some mediteranean location to attempt to enhance a car's appeal.

Even my Nissan is called a Qashqai after some warlike bunch in Persia or somewhere. Ironic really given that it was made in Sunderland and designed in the Midlands I gather.

I'd quite like a Nissan Whitley Bay or a Ford Birkenhead I think.

Or start naming them after personalities......painters, poets, inventors.
Perhaps a Ford Madox Brown or an Austin Chamberlain. Morris Saatchi, ( sic ),
Humber Bridge, Nissen Hut.

Brilliant!
Didn't Ford Madox Brown paint 'The Last Austin of England'?

I didn't have any problem with nine of the special editions, BTW. The Caddy was a bit tacky.

The Last of England by Ford Madox Brown.
Now in Manchester Town Hall.

They had to leave the Austin on the quayside !
Thats why he's got a cob on !

The Harlequin actually only came in four colourways, so all the ones with, for example, a red NSR door would have a yellow roof. Google images throws up a surprising number of examples of each, and some mainland Europe-only Golf Harlequins too.

If you had the Polo and a panel got damaged, the replacement could be whatever colour was the cheapest, because it wouldn't need to match. I don't see why all cars can't be like that.

I wonder what colour the Polo would be described as on it's V5.
Shameful special edition cars - The Nut
The one in the article would be red on the v5, the colour of the sills and rear quarter all the other colours are bolt on panels.
Shameful special edition cars - Ted

Just down from the Humber Bridge is parked a lovely
Vauxhall Bridge.

Just looked up the number plate on the DVLA website. It's red on their database.

Not much wrong with making often mundane cars just a tad more interesting.

The Pug 106 Roland Garros a good example of a mundane car being turned into something that had a slightly more upmarket feel. It was just some fancy leather really, but it did make a difference.
Shameful special edition cars - -

>> The Pug 106 Roland Garros

The 206 version was nice too especially if you got the 2.0 litre Diesel, and the theme was continued onto the C2 with the 'Code'.

I've got a Mondeo Ghia X Estate Fullacrap special edition. Two tone silver over mud. Black leather interior with crumb and coffee effect. Quite rare y'know. The rusted on bikerack on the roof gives it a certain extra exclusivity I feel.
Shameful special edition cars - Bagpuss
In order to get rid of the last of the line 190E (W201) models around 1993, Mercedes stuck spoilers on them and did this to the interior, calling the result the 190E Avantgarde Azzurro Sportline.

tinyurl.com/32t4lxd

Despite the very high prices, they actually sold them.

Shameful special edition cars - ....
You've got the VW interior designers for the Harlequin range kicking themeselves they never thought of that interior.
Shameful special edition cars - Zero
I would like one of them!

1992 and no cat ?

You'll probably find it was originally sold in Germany and "exported" to the Czech Republic at night, down a dirt track.

I once had a Citroen 2CV6 "Stampede". It was creamy yellow, with pictures of horses running around on a ranch plastered down the side. The word "Stampede" was emblazoned across the boot. Also, roo bars front and rear and a luggage rack on the boot lid. All these extra items were brown.

My mother had bought it brand new for my sister when she was 17, and it had been passed to me when she "upgraded" to a Vauxhall Nova some years later. I was a student at the time and gave not a stuff about image (still don't really), I actually enjoyed owning and driving the daft thing.

It wasn't an official Citroen special edition, it was one of a number of "unique" special editions created by the local dealer, Eric Whites of Ascot. I think they made about a dozen of them, all different colours and themes.
Shameful special edition cars - Dog
2CV and stampede ... Mmmm, I'll have to have a think on that one :-)
Shameful special edition cars - mikeyb
For any fans of the inbetweeners you will be familiar with Simons Fiat cinquecento "Hawaii"

I love the classic line when he is atempting to chat up a girl who has told him she likes his car and he replys "Its a special edition, but its not really from Hawaii!
Shameful special edition cars - Boxsterboy
>> 2CV and stampede ... Mmmm, I'll have to have a think on that one :-)

Can you have a stampede with only 2 horses??

I particularly like the hubcaps on the Fiat Panda Italia '90. Very clever.
Shameful special edition cars - Mike Hannon
I've just remembered, our family doctor still has the 2CV special edition that was his first-ever car about 25 years ago. It has the word ZEN across the bootlid in fancy letters about a foot high. I've often wondered about that one.
Shameful special edition cars - Dog
>>I've just remembered, our family doctor still has the 2CV special edition<<

He must be pretty laid back if he's a Buddhist and drives a 2CV,
Just look at how Thailand is laid back (or should that read laid out.)

Sign seen in the back of a 2CV:
"Speed Kills - Drive a 2CV and live forever!"

I'd like one really, but the price is rediculous now - should have bought one 10 years ago when you couldn't give them away!

Citroen AX was the all time high (er low?) point of special editions, there were about 30 of the things - all bascially the same, and all pretty basic!
Shameful special edition cars - bhoywonder
Still see one of those multi-coloured polos driving about Glasgow.
Shameful special edition cars - Alanovich
Yep, there's one down here in Reddin' also.

I used to like the VW Golf Bon Jovi. What the blazes was that about?
Shameful special edition cars - Clk Sec
There's quite a few of them around, or perhaps I keep seeing the same one time and time again.

Did they make many?
Shameful special edition cars - Focusless
>> I used to like the VW Golf Bon Jovi. What the blazes was that about?

"During the 1990s, Volkswagen sponsored three high-profile rock bands' European tours, and issued a special-edition Golf, with distinctive exterior markings, for each: the Golf Pink Floyd Edition (1994), the Golf Rolling Stones Edition (1995), and the Golf Bon Jovi Edition (1996)."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Golf_Mk3

Same story as the 'Good Stuff' Ibiza mentioned earlier - Seat are sponsoring Shakira's tour.

Jaysus ... I can't believe there was a Pink Floyd Golf (my fave group)
Funnily enough - yesterday I was going to state that out of all the cars I've owned (over 40)
I've never owned a special edition, until I looked at my Almera and the SE that follows the 1.8 :)
