While not being a fan of these muppets, I'm amazed they got a conviction on this guy. He wasn't the retailer so what checks does he have to make (legally) on customers?

(This is still so rife that it's a standing joke that our local haircut expert is on the satnav of the auction delivery drivers!)

As long as people see mileage as a (the?) major factor in judging a car, so it will contiue.

The buying public does not seem to grasp the value judgement to be made between 50,000 motorway miles and 20,000 stop/starts to the local town over 10 years.

My current car has about 10k miles after 12 months. As a percentage too many of those are for short journeys for this not to impact the car longer term in my opinion. Occasionally taken on a very long blast but not often.

Now I could find a need to go to Stevenage next week... I will come up with ways to avoid that I think.

All this stuff about short journeys being bad is bull excrement if the car is serviced annually. I speak as one whose beloved wife has run cars for 15 years averaging 3k miles a year. Engines near perfect.. due to annual oil and filter changes and TLC.

(The Mini Clubman Estate destroyed 4 - or was it 5 or 6?- exhausts incl stainless in 15 years but the engine - decoked - burned no oil.and had as new oil pressure . after 50 k miles in 15 years.. We were clearing out this week and found the letter from the buyer of it in 1993 who wrote and thanked us for the wonderful condition it was in.. "better than he thought when he bought it.". )

BIG money is made faking newish cars with megamiles - service car after 1 year with 20K on the clock (adjusted to 10K)...repeat in year 2 and 3...........so true 60K reads as 30K.

Difference in value of car might be £2500+

or

Returned to leasing company with agreed mileage of 30,000 AVOIDING excess mileage charge of say 12 p per mile - 12p x30,000 = £3,600

Oh that's a relief then. I feared that people on x mile servicing might tend to get them serviced after x miles and ignore the time lapses.

But even on one car, this would only be 45,000 miles. With all due respect, the engines should be "perfect" in terms of functionality.

I would wager when stripped they have at best, no less wear than a 150,000 mile engine that's been well serviced but treated to regular long runs.

My car is on 11,200 now and is mostly city miles, probably 2000 of that 11,200 were done on high speed open roads. I would think the suspension and brakes are probably more worn than you would expect the same car to be at 30k if it was all motorway miles!.

My plan is just to keep it to as long as possible until I can run it into the ground, small FIATs are designed for lots of short trips.

At the moment I seem to spend more time stuck at traffic lights than I do moving!.
