OK , just for a bit of fun and also to maybe get an insight into the contributors on here, many are questioning FF's decision . FWIW I think he has made the choice best for him and thats what counts!

So the criteria is
Your spend is £26k
You buy one car
The car has a five year warranty (if need to pay extra for this then cost needs to come out the £26k)
For the benefit of argument, we will assume a max list price of £30k which would probably be achievable for the £26k through negotiation / broker etc.

So what do you buy??

I'll start

New Hyundai Santa Fe 7 seat Premium £30195 (ok just a tiny bit over the 30k)

You must be getting a serious surplus of sexual advances if you need one of those. I'd have thought the shoes would be enough.

You haven't stipulated that this car has to be new. Does it?

Interesting. This is harder than it looks. I tried for a Volvo XC60, but found even a base model was just over £30k through a broker...

Now I've found one that appeals to the heart:

Citroën C5 Tourer Exclusive, 2.2 HDI (200bhp) auto, lists for a shade under £30k.
Depreciation would be a nightmare, so I'm not sure I could actually bring myself to buy it with my money though... One last car with Hydractive 3+...

One for the head:
BMW 320d SE Touring, also listing just under £30k.
Boring as hell mind, but probably nice to own. Once you start fitting all the options to match the Citroën's spec the list price will probably sky-rocket...

I doubt I could get much off the list price on the Beemer either.

Subaru Forester petrol auto for £23,120 on-the-road cash price with two year's interest free credit, which includes the ‘Everything Taken Care of’ aftercare programme.

I guess there's enough left in the kitty to top up the warranty (or better still, stash the 3 grand as a contingency fund). Though I'd be tempted to add a leather interior for which my local dealer quoted €2000 (approx. £1500) recently. That still leaves £1500 in the kitty.

Head, heart, kids and dogs sorted :-)

A BIG discount on old model undoubtedly

Now that is interesting, thanks FB, we're looking for a used XT for SWMBO at the moment, she doesn't fancy the Outback after all, preferring Forester, but i was trying to keep her in something quick which she enjoys hence older XT...however as we have a couple of weeks off we just might wander over to the Subaru dealer at Spratton and see what they have to offer, wasn't considering new but who knows for the right deal?

There's no rush, we have an investment maturing in the new year so were going to use that money to buy the replacement allowing us to sell her C2 privately, but should we find a good deal before...

Look on Subaru.com (US Site) it's the 2014 model! due in USA in January.

There were zero Foresters on the subara.co.uk site but lately lots of low mileage cars

Just looked myself - they had the 2014 model showing and now they are showing the old 2013 model.

Hmm, cross between Cashcow and Xtrail with a Rav4 tail, probably grow on me in time but prefer the current and previous model looks wise, simpler lines and little in the way of fashionable content.

Available with a six speed manual box (non turbo). I wonder if that'll address the problem of the old manual being a bit short geared on long distance work.

They don't sell the turbo with a manual box in America, though there seem to be plenty of people on the forums who would like this combination. Probably still a minority amongst the general punters though.

The biggest change is the CVT auto, which would rule it out for me!

Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2.0 JTDm-2 170 bhp TCT Sportiva. Add pratt nav and a double sunroof, and a nice paint job, and that's about 28-29k list. 5 year warranty standard.

That was clearly thrown in to favour Kia/Hyundai... ;)

Personally, I'd take a standard three warranty and be glad not to have keep dealer servicing after year three...

There are more 5 year warranties offered than I first expected. Audi, Toyota, Vauxhall, Alfa, Chevrolet, Ford, Mitsubishi, Lexus..........all offer 5 years on at least part of their ranges. There may be more.

The thread terms do allow an extended warranty to be purchased though; it just need to come form the £26k...

I'd ave a look at the new Beetle, treporte, and with THAT gearbox, mated to a petrol injun.

Nothing wrong with the Insignia, but I would have saved myself the best part of £10k and bought a 'nearly new' one. But each to their own.
Manufacturer's cover until its third birthday included, and then just the cost of a good aftermarket for two years afterwards to find out of the saving.

Well my car was in for some new tyres yesterday, and surprisingly the MB dealer was only a couple of quid more than blackcircles.com. I'd booked it in last week, and they lent me a bottom of the range C180 for the day - completely standard, no options (bar auto) and flat black paint. I had no great expectations, but actually thought it was a really nice car. Comfortable, pretty well equipped despite the bog standard trim level, it rode and handled well and was quite brisk enough for me. Thirsty though.

On that basis, and after a quick peruse of the MB configurator and Drive The Deal with a notional £26k to spend, a MB C200CDI Exec SE Auto Estate in metallic paint would be my choice. I realise I've ignored the £30k list price objective (It comes in at £31,104), but its £25,916.59 after discount. If pushed on the 5 yr warranty then I'd ditch the metallic and have it in bright red, I'm sure £600 would cover another 2 yrs of MB warranty :-)

If you're going to hold me to the £30k list as well, then it'll be a C200CDI Exec SE Auto saloon in metallic paint. £29,904 list, £24,796.90 through DtD

... I'd look for a mint 24v Alfa 166 - there are certainly a few still around - and spend the rest of the money on maintaining it properly. I know just the man to spend it with too.

Or one of those big ugly Kias - there must be a nice little V6 surely? - and spend the rest of the money on booze.
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Runfer D'Hills
I'm with you Peter ! Any of your choices might even still be worth something at the end of the 5 years too. A 5 year old Cavalier ( Insignia ) will be worth buttons.
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Fursty Ferret
Must be diesel.

Edit: I considered the 1 year old Insignia very carefully, but impossible to find one with adaptive cruise at that age.

FF Who said you could move the goalposts????????? :)

Ok, the Santa Fe still ticks the criteria so I stick with my choice.....
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Runfer D'Hills
Friend of mine has a Santa Fe commercial ( no back seats and blacked out windows ) but he's Irish and a bit weird. Not that the two characteristics are necessarily connected you understand. It's just that it's loads cheaper to run a "van" in Ireland than a car. He was studying my E class estate and trying to figure out if he could get away with "commercialising" one...

Who'd spend 30 big ones on a Dai-Hy-Ki-Whatsitsname anyway?

:-)

If you were Fursty Ferret...... - BobbyG

And would take a Hyuunndaiiaa any day over a repmobile estate.......... :)
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Runfer D'Hills
Bobby Bobby Bobby, there's no hope is there? Are you really content to spend the rest of your days with your feet increasingly taking on the appearance and smell of rotting fish while aspiring to drive around in an expensive Korean imitation of a proper car?

Sheesh !

Attempting to tackle both challenges, if it helps, DtD will do a flat black E220 CDI SE Auto estate with privacy glass for £27,947.50...

Not sure if ordering privacy glass is enough to persuade the revenue - might need to actually board up the windows ;-)
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Runfer D'Hills
Well, his Hyundai has no back seat but the back and side back glass is just glass albeit the darkest tint there is. You can't see in. Not sure if you can see out, never sat in it.
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - PeterS
It can't be *that* difficult to unbolt the rear seats can it ;-)
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Runfer D'Hills
Not sure how it works, Irish law and all that. Maybe it has to be registered by the supplying dealer as a van or somesuch. Or offered as one. Dunno. Big savings though. His wife has an Audi A6 estate with ( I think ) the 1.9d engine. That costs something like €900 a year in road tax alone. Vans much cheaper. I seem to think there's a purchase tax premium on passenger cars too of some kind. I'm sure one of our Irish correspondents can clarify.

If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Gromit
If the Audi was registered before July 2008, its costing €600 a year to tax; since then, tax is calculated in bands according to CO2 emissions, so a typical 1.9 diesel would be somewhere between €156 and €225 a year.

VRT is now calculated based on CO2 emissions too (after VAT is added to the pre-tax price of the car) so it quickly adds up!
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Gromit
Humph, if he's self-employed he'll pay no vehicle registration tax on the purchase price, and can offset the cost of running it against his business, afaik. Makes sense if he can...
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Runfer D'Hills
That sounds right Gromit, he is self-emp.
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - legacylad
Sadly, there is nothing I remotely fancy listing at less than £30k new.
S'pose thats one of the joys of buying 6yo cars which I have done in recent years. And some of the benefits of getting older and a favourable post code for insurance purposes.
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - BobbyG
But surely some of those 6 year old cars were new at some point??

So for the point of the exercise there is nothing on the market for £30k that interests you?
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - legacylad
I thought that when new the car had to be listed at sub £30k
My current car, bought sub £10k, was listed over £30k when new.
I would love a 335i petrol convertible to replace my 330Ci and could probably get one for £15k, but list is way over £30k and it ticks all the boxes for me. As a daily, reliable runner I would simply not consider anything else, unless I could afford the upkeep of an exotic which I can't.
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Gromit
"Must be diesel"

GB and I will swap our Foresters for the lower-spec diesel manual at €24,700 approx. then. Or LPG the petrol one...

Already cleared with my equally Luddite LPG man, he's going to fit a pressure pumped flashlube unit as the vacuum fed doesn't supply terribly well under boost, circa £1600 all in for conversion.

To difficult to narrow it down so....

Volvo XC90 - huge discounts so you can squeeze in at 27K + balance for warranty

VW Sharan 170 PS DSG (likely to be the replacement for our aging Sharan)

VW CC - well under budget

C5 Tourer - fully decked out still under budget

Fair few others I could think of (but no Vauxhalls :-))
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Lygonos
Having driven a 'new-shape' Forester diesel as a courtesy car while my XT was being serviced I wouldn't buy one myself.

Bigger inside, but quite roly-poly to drive.

Buy a 3-4 yr old XT, keep the change for servicing and fuel.

And to pay for your speeding tickets.

And bail.

Drive the deal

in SE spec its £25,371 which IMO is a lot of car for the money

in SEL its £27,859

Drop down to a 140 PS DSG in base S spec and its just over 22K

Go for a base spec manual petrol and you can come in a smidge under 20K

Harder than it looks, isn't it? :-)

I did consider a Jag, but as I said in the other thread, the dealer wouldn't let me test drive one without putting down a £500 deposit. Hence, no sale!

If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Avant
This depends on whether under the rules of the game I'm allowed to keep my Skoda. If I can, I'd go for a VW Golf GTI convertible or Audi A3 convertible with the 2.0 TSO engine.

I suspect that the spirit of the exercise is, as for FF, for this to be the only or main car. In which case - given that I'd prefer to buy new - I'm finding it very difficult to think of a £26k medium-sized hatch or estate (the size I need) that can do anything that another Octavia vRS estate can't do.

With all three cars named above I'd wait for the new model to come out.
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - WillDeBeest
Avant has it about right; especially for a single man like Fursty, a Golf GTI seems about perfect. Did I read that they've reintroduced a version of the Mk 1's upholstery fabric? Anyway, I think that would be my choice, but as a hatch rather than Avant's convertible.

Think I forgot to mention that in the original thread - considered the 2013 Golf but it's impossible to get one with the same toys as the Insignia for under £35k. :-(

Not really a Golf at that price...
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - WillDeBeest
Fair enough, Fursty - you've admitted your fondness for buttons and gizmos, so you're looking for a mobile electronic toybox; Bobby is at the other extreme and seems to want a mobile garden shed (which at least has the benefit of placing his passengers as far as possible from his shoes.)

I suppose this is what Bobby was getting at when he set up the thread: teasing out the various personalities and preferences here. It may be buttons, it maybe sheer space (although my heart sinks when I see my taxi company has sent a van rather than a saloon for an airport trip); for me it's sense of occasion - that 'oh yes, this is nice' feeling that makes even driving to work a bit of an event. It can come from all sorts of aspects of a car, but without it - I may have mentioned our dull-as-old-pants Verso - a car becomes an appliance, and certainly not worth 26 big ones.
If you were Fursty Ferret...... - Runfer D'Hills
I suppose I can sort of see where FF is coming from at one level. After all, he gets to "drive" something much more interesting for a living so his car isn't going to be in any circumstances the most thrilling thing he gets a shot of on a daily basis.

Reminds me of my pal and neighbour who is one of the more senior test engineers at Bentley. He gets to bring home whatever is the latest mule from work and to take them on autobahn trips or on frozen Scandinavian lakes or hoon round the Isle of Man or whatever.

Continentals, Mulsannes, Arnages everything.

They have a company car scheme where they can have a new anything from the VAG group every 6 months. I think it works something like there being a small tax efficient charge for a cheaper model rising to a larger payment if they want something posh. Most of the workers party to the scheme seem to go for anything from a Golf GTi to an Audi Q5 sort of territory.

My friend though always has a Fabia in base trim. Costs him almost nothing and as he says, it is more or less just a means of getting him the 5 miles to work when he gets to drive Bentleys all day. Most weekends he has a Bentley home with a laptop wired up to it in the boot checking something or other.

Can't knock his logic !

Heh heh ! An old school friend of mine went into the RAF and ended up flying fast jets for a while. Later in life he joined one of the passenger airlines as a pilot and has remained in that job since. He swears though ( I'm sure / I sincerely hope, he's kidding mind ) that if he ever comes up on the lottery that he'd be very tempted to do one more barrel roll before retiring disgracefully !

I sort of want to believe him.

Just imagine...
