Tempted. I'll speak to me dad, see if he wants to go.
|
i wouldnt mind going, i went to the first one... must of been 35 years ago or more
|

I first went to the motor show 35 - 40 years ago. Now those same models will be seen again at the classic motor show.
|
I went in 1972 and joined the bunfight for brochures and a "sit" in everything possible. Have to admit Midgets and B's were on the list.... as well as slightly more classy Stags and Morgans.
Missed the last train home and rather than sleeping on the platform blagged my way (as a 16yr old) into the large station hotel with the promise Dad would send a cheque for the bill. Supper, nice room and breakfast... result.

Good point.
The first motor show that I went to was around 1959 / 1960 when I was a youngster. I hitch-hiked to Earls Court with a pal of mine.

My first was in 1978. Don't suppose too many Chrysler Horizons or Lada 1500s will be reappearing as classics this time round.
|
|
When I went I lusted after the chrysler 180. Are there *any* of those left?
|
|
I used to see a car in a driveway on the edge of Coventry that was either a 180 or its slightly bigger brother (2000? Two-Litre?) Was still there in spring 2010 but I don't go that way any more.

You won't see many 180's around, Zero. Terminal body rot meant that mine only lasted 8 years - 1972 to 1980, and it required a vast amount of patching-up during that time.
I also heard that some owners suffered problems with the camshaft; something to do with the hardening process, and them adopting a banana like shape.
However, the drivers seat was the most comfortable I've ever experienced. And I still have the Radiomobile push button radio that I salvaged from the car before I sent it on its way, if any classic car folk are interested.
WDB. I think you said a while back that your uncle owned a 180. Did his last longer than mine?
|
No, wasn't me, Clk, because I haven't got any uncles. }:---(
I did get the occasional ride to school, circa 1980, in a friend's dad's dark green 2000, which had big, brown dralon velour seats. Much more comfortable in the back than his mum's 1975 Capri, but I couldn't tell you much more. 2000s were all automatics, I think, whereas you could have a manual 180.

Yeah I knew they were ferocious "rotters" which is why I asked.

A guy I know was given his company Chysler Alpine as part of his redundancy package. Fortunately, he had already got another job lined up and was about to resign anyway, so he gave the Alpine to his wife. It did indeed rot around her in about 5 years. Quite a fast thing for it's day though I seem to remember.

Little wonder they were rotters. I remember one occasion when I rather lazily, while putting the 180 in my garage, closed the drivers door by nudging it with my backside, and put a huge dent in it - the metal was that thin!
No problem, though, as I was able to punch it out just as easily from inside.
