Gordon Brown's Blue Jag - TheManWithNoName
Just been watching old GB's departure on TV (well there was sod all else on).

I noticed his Jag looked a bit bent around the door frames, or at least there seemed to be uneven gaps around the chrome door frames.
I realise these cars are taken apart and then rebuilt with extra reinforcement and thickened glass etc. Perhaps that explains the sloppy repairs.

Maybe as he was on his way out they'd drive him away in the 'old banger' they keep round the back, y'know the cut n shut and then save the posh new silver one for new boy Dave.

I noticed that the jags were the armour plated jobs, but on Daveys you could see 2 squares behind the grill. They looked a bit like the flashing lights on unmarked police cars, but not sure if thats what they really were. Any other thoughts?

They were flashing blue along with two under the front bumper when he left Downing Street at about 21:45.

Looks like the plods got it wrong, the new PM did not have a motorcycle traffic clearing squad on leaving the palace.

I was shouting at the telly while that was on - "let's look at Dave's Jag again'. Beautiful extended wheelbase jobbie. Lovely. Sod the politics, nice car!

Did you notice how Gordon Brown had a police escort in to Buckingham Palace but not out?

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere of one departing PM, I believe it was Edward Heath, who found, when he got downstairs after meeting the Queen, that the car had left, presumably to collect the new PM.

He then jumped into a passing taxi, I believe.

charles clark said Ted Heath had the longest sulk he had even known. It went on for years till his death.

would it be correct to say the french and german governments use citreon and bmw or mercs respectively. Wonder what the japanese government use or the chinese ?.

Wiki has an entry on "Official state cars" it lists the cars used by most countries.

More than that, I think the very existence of certain large French cars - notably the Citroën CX Prestige - was due to the requirement of government ministers and senior civil servants for capacious French-built transport.
The first time I saw a C6 in a Citroën showroom, my instinct was to climb into the back seat and have the sales staff address me as Monsieur le Président.

I can remember when Downing Street was just an ordinary London street and the public could stroll down it at will. Now it looks like a prison yard, and photographs taken through railings make it look as if the politician has been arrested.

Yes very sad how things have changed and not just in the UK.
Many years ago on one of our New York trips we went knowing where the best value lunch in town was.
The United Nations delegates dining room. Just wait at the entrance and when they had space in we went. Super meal and a great view over the river. Guess what - it was highly subsidised.

But on our last visit to Washington the security of the White House was not up to snuff.
I alone was was locked inside the White house grounds when all others had been chucked out. Then the presidential car slowly passed by me a few feet away and I got a personal wave from the president. Then the goons reacted to me being there, fortunately they were polite.

...I can remember when Downing Street was just an ordinary London street...

It was as recently as the late 1970s when you could walk along Downing Street on the same side of the road as number 10.

I think you were allowed to ring the bell and present a petition.

The rot started when that half of the street was closed off by railings, then you could only walk along the other pavement.

A few terrorist outrages saw the installation of rising ramps in the road, and finally Maggie's Gates - similar in style to those at Buckingham Palace - which completely blocked the street.

I know that's the way it is with globalisation, but it seems a shame to me that while the French use big Citroens and Peugeots, the Germans Mercedes or BMW, and whatever, the Brits have to go to the Indians to get some official transport.

Mike,

It was either that or a home made wheelbarrow from Chorley.

Would that be the Wheelbarrow Antibes, or the WheelBarrow Calypso?

Why not something made in Scotland? Oh yes. The shipyards have closed.

Just be glad that said gentleman was being driven in order to resign rather than re-elect himself.....

I noticed that May upstaged both Brown and Cameron by turning up to the Home Office in the back of a new XJ. Cable obviously din't think much of chauffered cars, his driver had to shout him back!

He's still shell shocked at being a minister. He didn't realise he has a car. He'll soon get the hang of the luxuries, and then what?

Radio 2 this morning stated that 'Dave' has dispensed with his motorcycle outriders. Surprising really, as surely it is important to be timely in that role...and the importance of office etc (i.e. the importance of the role performed, not the importance of the person filling it). Wonder how long it will take to reverse that decision (if R2 is correct).

Its less to do with being on time, and more to do with being stopped and becoming an easy target. His personal protection squad must be having kittens.

Pity we haven't got a senior plod brave enough to tell Dave he is getting security cover, (including motorcycles) if he wants them or not.
