We are about to become grandparents for the first time. Looking at car seats/baby carriers, they seem to have moved on a bit in the last 30 years. Wonder if anyone has bought one recently or could give advice or the benefit of their experience. My son has a Golf IV, and i have a new Polo.I see things like "Iso Fix" and i'm struggling to get my head round it all.
I was hoping to get one that would transfer easily between the the both cars.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I bought them last about 5 years ago.
Isofix is all well and good, but its no great help in moving stuff from one car to another.
Safety and comfort are obvious givens.
There are two further things which I beieve are important; Being able to switch between cars and to put chair in and take out without disturbing the baby
Therefore I like the ones that the baby sits in a basket like container which clips to a base already within the vehicle.
In addition, a baby seat which clips onto the pushchair means pretty seamless baby tranport without disturbing them. It also provides a basket that they can continue to sleep in even after leaving the car or pushchair.
This is a link to the ones that we have/had;

Buy one that fits and works for you in the polo, it will fit and work just as well in the Golf. It might not the other way round.

All new cars built since 2006 have standardised "Isofix" child seat mountings. Any seat should fit any car without using the seatbelts to attach the seat.

Should is the operative word. Its no guarantee, many had the mountings but they were not useable.

Indeed. Also note that the baby seat will be on the rear bench behind one of the two front seats. Given the size of the baby seat, it may restrict how far back the front seat can slide. We certainly found this to be the case in our Leon.

The Which? best buys in car seats for seats, where both Isofix and belt installation is possible, are :

My experience goes back ten years, when Isofix was new and anything but standardized, so I won't offer any specific advice. But I will offer this general suggestion: buy from a specialist that will train you (I don't just mean show you) how to fit it. The best safety equipment is useless unless you use it properly (see Alun Armstrong's cycle helmet perched jauntily on the back of his head in New Tricks) and fitting baby seats isn't self-explanatory. You might save yourself ten quid by buying online but the baby might not appreciate that.

With 6 x grandchildren appearing in the last 7 years we have some experience.
First size - we bought Mamas & Papas Stage 1 - great. Easy to fix, in / out was easy.
Stage 2 & 3 we have Britax and Britax - 2 x different models.
2 of our sons went out and bought Iso-fix attached at vast expense £200+ each IIRC.
In fact 1 x car was shunted up the back a few months back with both kids strapped in. The bill for replacing, paid by 3rd party insurer, was £400+. (New new car bought after the bash as well!)
Although the technology of ISO Fix has attractions we have had difficulties between various car makes and models and various seats. Potential to rip the leather seats!!!!
When using the Iso fix chairs, on the odd occasion, we have used the seatbelts to fit the ISOfix chairs rather than the ISOfix connection.
Our 7 yr old is now using a booster seat as she is considerably taller/built than the average. There's a whole range of models and prices in that scenario when you get to that stage in 2019 or thereabouts.

Can't babies and kids sit on the lap of the front seat passenger any more?
And when old enough, on the drivers lap while pretending to steer the car?

Thank you all for the helpful advice.

Best wishes, maltrap.
For fitting, maybe ask the local H&S Exexuctive, or fire brigade. They'll probably put you in touch with the best people to advise on installation.
