 Car Hire Mallorca - maltrap
Just back from a lovely week in Mallorca, spoiled only by my car hire experience.
The car was hired via Holidayautos from Record Go. Their fuel policy is "full to empty"
I was charged 85 euros for a full tank of fuel, in a Kia Getz, and returned it a week later half full. Their fuel policy is non negotiable on a 7 day hire, can anyone reccomend a hire company with a full to full policy ?

I've used Holiday Autos before and that was a full to full hire. But as they are a broker you're dealing with numerous companies. Mine went back very broken though so the fuel cost was irrelevant ;-) It was a write off.

I think a lot of companies now charge for a full tank and you bring it back empty. A way to make more money out of us mugs.

For latest info on car hire I use the TripAdvisor Forums.

Taking a quick look at the Forum on Palma de Majorca, people seem to be recommending Sixt. Lots of scare stories about other firms, though.

See my earlier thread on Holiday Autos: www.car4play.com/forum/post/index.htm?t=12021&m=267963&v=e

I'm hoping to provide an update shortly.

At the end of the day its the total cost of the hire that counts but customers these days are super price conscious and invariably go for the cheapest internet quote.

Like airlines charging for your baggage or insurance companies charging large sums for amendments companies look around for ways to make some additional money but keep the headline cost low.

"Full to empty" is a bit irritating but it's a result of cut throat competition. Its really not that difficult to makes sure that you only leave a quarter tank or less.

It is if you don't drive very far.

I also suffered similar costs for fuel with Goldcars in Mallorca in September, reported here I think. People then were saying that Sixt would have been better but not sure on their fuel policy.

The Corsa I hired had a trip computer. It wasn't difficult to find the 'remaining range'.

I did put five Euros worth in when it stopped showing kilometres and started shouting 'fill up now' twenty Ks from the airport.

The guy who checked it over had a wry smile on his face when he saw that.

We used Sixt on mainland Spain back in the summer booked through doyouspain.com

It was full out full back, and they didnt even try to sell me the tank of fuel - just said I would be charged if it wasnt full

I've looked at "doyouspain" they offered a small car with Avis for 135 euros a week, their fuel policy is "full to full" which all sounds very good. Has anyone else used doyouspain, as i haven't heard of them before. If so, would you reccomend them ?

I'd never heard of them before, but a colleague at work recommended them to me. Says hes used them several times over the last few years and never had any problems.

I was happy enough with them, but then, my experience was a one off until I use them again (which I probably will)

I tend to think that a broker is really just a middleman and unless they are really bad then there is not to much they can get wrong - the service is really down to the hire company.

One thing I did like about doyouspain was that I only paid a small amount upfront to them and the bulk was paid to the hire company at pickup

It's a few years ago now, but we used this car hire company;

www.hiperrentacar.com

They were fine - very easy to deal with.

Used them a few years back. They were very cheap, but appeared to have a shortage of cars. We had to wait for a car that had just been returned to be washed and bought back out in Majorca. Quite a lot of other unhappy customers who appeared to have been waiting for longer than us
