Now the weather is starting to cool, although far from freezing, my door seals are starting to become a bit sticky. I'm worried if we get a real frost they could be very difficult to open. Is silicon spray the spray of choice for the seals in cold weather? Thanks. Reply to this message | Report message

A wipe with silicone oil, if that's what you mean, is OK for rubber seals. Halfords sell a "silicone lubricant", Lidl often have their W5 Universal Silicone Oil spray. Reply to this message | Report message

I have found the Lidl W5 universal silicon spray to be next to useless, it seems to evaporate leaving little or nothing behind, certainly never stopped my door seals sticking. I use Vaseline. Reply to this message | Report message

If that's the case then (if it was me) I would wipe them with a dishcloth after finishing washing up. Reply to this message | Report message

Well I've cleaned the seals today and cannot believe the amount of dirt (black dirt like excess rubber) that came off the seals on the doors. The door frames were very clean as expected on a car that is just over 4 months old. Hopefully the cleaner seals on the doors will now stop the sticking. Reply to this message | Report message

>Maybe french chalk would be better? Door seals on the 944 I had used to be a PITA for sticking in winter. Service manager recommended a quick wipe over with talcum powder. Apart from - Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) which belongs to a group of polymeric organosilicon compounds that are commonly referred to as silicones you mean? Reply to this message | Report message

Why would the seals be worse in winter than in summer? Surely the problem in winter is with ice forming and nothing to do with the actual seal. In warm weather the seals would be more flexible under compression and thus form an airtight seal that was more difficult to break. Reply to this message | Report message

In winter the problem is water getting between the seal and the body shell and freezing the two together. ONly cure is to prevent water getting on the seal. Reply to this message | Report message

I agree - its really nothing to do with the seal or cold weather as such its about ice. So why are the OP'S seals becoming sticky now? It's not cold enough for icing. >Is this actually common? No, I don't think it is. I've only had one car where it happened. On the 944 it was always the top seal where the door met the roofline. The hatch rubbers were also prone to it if the two stops weren't adjusted correctly. That was easy to spot though - the hatch would either rattle or need a good shove to close if they weren't. I have never used any form of lubricant on door seals. They do freeze in winter, but rather than heaving away at the handle I simply give the door a push, which 'breaks the ice' as it were'. Door then usually opens easily. Reply to this message | Report message
