I know someone in Paris who does slot racing, an American in middle age. He's got lots of heavily-tweaked sporting slot jalopies and belongs to a club with a lot of like-minded Frogs. They hold tournaments between clubs with cash prizes.
The racing is far from realistic although it's easy to crash at bends, which is where the skill and rhythm come in. But the cars do scale-equivalent speeds of 400 mph on the straights. The track isn't scalextric standard track but hand-built and permanent. The racers are very stripped down, racing chassis with a plastic body flapping on top, like Nascar cars. Owners modify the motors to make them quicker or more responsive. It's very fiddly.
I'd have loved it when a kid and naturally went to a club meeting with the friend (who of course has other interests) and tried my hand with the slot racers. It's not at all easy. But my boredom threshold is a bit low for it these days.
