Volkswagen Golf V - High miles, low price? - legacylad
A friend of mine was today taking his car for a p/ex valuation.
Its an '06 golf GT Tdi, 3 dr in black. alloys, black leather interior. Good tyres (Pirelli & Dunlop) full main dealer documented service history and absolutely immaculate both inside and out.
For the first 3 years of its life it was his driving school car.For the past 3 years it has been his wifes. His current driving school car, an '09 A3 Tdi is now being passed on to his wife so he is chopping in the Golf against a new model A3.
Mileage is 185k. It looks like it has driven only a fraction of this.
With a ballpark figure of £800 discount off a new one, what do we think he will be offered for it?...I assume it will be underwritten and sent straight to the auction.

If really low value I might even be tempted to make him an offer myself.

In the low 4k region.... that is starship mileage, so will go straight to the trade...

What sort of mileages do people run their cars to now then Tony? I've taken a few up to nigh on 200k but never beyond although I suspect they could easily have done so. Would've thought taxi drivers and suchlike wouldn't stop there? Might be wrong.

we have three cars between us, SWMBO has an 02 Galaxy TDI PD done 199K, I have a TDCI Mondeo estate on a 55 plate done 190K and we have a Landcruiser Amazon for indulgance, caravan towing and winter ski holidays on an 02 done 137K! I expect them all to carry on a bit longer!

my mantra... change the oil , not the car
Volkswagen Golf V - High miles, low price? - T junction
We have 2 cars between the 2 of us, an 03 Volvo V40 1.9D 205k miles and a 56 Volvo V50 2.0D with 168k miles. No plans to change at the moment as both running well.

BIL just got rid of 2 Sharans from his taxi company. One was 225K and I think the other was 265K. He got rid as they were starting to get expensive to run, although interestingly, the higher mileage one had been the least bother during his ownership

Now scrapped due to repeated suspension failures, but my brother got his Rover 420 diesel up to over 300k.

I know of some with 3-400 k on them

We used to say that the 300E (124) Mercs weren't run in till 200k...
Volkswagen Golf V - High miles, low price? - Runfer D'Hills
Well now, I just put "W124" in the keyword search box on A.T.

Check out the blue estate...Looks very tidy.

Feel lucky anyone?

Volkswagen Golf V - High miles, low price? - legacylad
He was hoping for £3.5k- £4k p/ex...if less than that I think it would be best sent to the auction by himself.
Volkswagen Golf V - High miles, low price? - Runfer D'Hills
I think he'd be doing jolly well at £2.5k I'm sorry to say. Cars like that are "keepers" unless there's some pressing reason to sell. Worth far more to the owner than to the market.
Volkswagen Golf V - High miles, low price? - mikeyb
According to Parkers its value for part ex is just over 5K with 60K on it.

I know they are not the most accurate guide, but they cant be that far off the mark.

I'm with Humph on this and reckon couple of grand unless the dealer uses their margin to offer an inflated part ex.

I guess the issue for the trade is that at that mileage is probably not very saleable to a private punter, so where does it go???? Value to someone who knows and loves it far higher than to the trade

>> Worth far more to the owner than to the market.

Nearly all cars are.

Modern cars do seem to do astonishing mileages compared to those of a few years ago (except in America where some 40s - 70s cars did stratospheric mileages). I love the idea of a straight or V6 Mercedes, auto and well run in, driven sympathetically and properly maintained. Should go on for ever.

Trouble is, unless you know the owners from new, you don't know what's been done to that nice-looking, smooth-running 170,000 mile example. Even if the price is low, the car's a pig in a poke.

He will get 2.5k max p/ex for it, it will be punted straight to auction where it might creep to 3k, it will be on some back street lot with 65k on the clock, and up for sale at 6k.

My thoughts exactly Z
However, I would try to contact the previous owner to confirm mileage and any previous accidents.
And if a new owner took it to a main dealer for any work, would not the true mileage show up on their records, and what about a new service book as the old one shows180k miles, or am i just being naive?

V5 not available for you to view until you have bought the car, you have no way of checking previous owner prior to that.

Probably, but got your money by then.

A little, blank service books available on ebay

Those W124s are revered, but proper maintenance involved lots of scheduled parts replacement and preventive maintenance IIRC, one reason why they were expensive to run.

I imagine the few with proper main dealer service history will be much better than those maintained outside the network with parts replaced on a need basis.

I thought they had all been stolen and sent to west Africa.

Financially, wouldn't he be better off trade in the 09 Audi and keep the 06 Golf, if its really in as good condition as it seems?

The Audi will still appeal to a buyer who wants the badge and is willing to take a hit on higher-than-average mileage for the year. The 185k on the Golf will scare off all but the canny buyers, who are also smart enough not to pay over the odds for it.

Edit: better again, keep the Golf and lease a replacement for the Audi. After having a word with his accountant to make the sure the actual cost per month to the business is kept as low as humanly possible...

His current driving school A3, an '09 plate, has 162k on the clock. Still looks like new, as does the Golf. I think his wife prefers the Audi, and just fancies a change after 3 years with the Golf.
Not sure about leasing...he does around 55k miles a year and don't leasing companies charge extra for large mileages? I assume he has looked at this possibility. I shall see him tomorrow and find out what he was offered in p/ex.
Volkswagen Golf V - High miles, low price? - Alastairw
There are specific leasing companies for ADIs. There is one in Leicester, ISTR, which may be owned by Hitachi capital now. I'll have a sprot round at work tomorrow, if I get a moment. Incidentally, if your friend doesn't have an accountant....

>> (except in America where some 40s - 70s cars did stratospheric mileages).

Huge engines in a very cooking state of tune. Low pressure / high volume lubrication systems using mineral oil with frequent oil changes.
Last forever.

The downside is fuel consumption.......

3k miles "lube" changes mostly. Lot of americans still do lots of oil changes per year with very cheap oil.

My previous VW, a November 1999 MkIV 1.6 8v Bora, was PX'd at 13 years of age with 75k on the clock. It looked virtually brand new both inside and out even after all that time - in fact I wondered at first why I was changing it, until I remembered being bored by the performance, despite the excellent torque output even at low revs.

But those engines were often damaged by neglect in practice. Some designs were exceptionally durable if basically maintained. The Chrysler slant six, made I think in three capacities, was said by garage men to be good for a quarter of a million miles.

They weren't all that thirsty in all cases either. My Plymouth which had the 3.7 litre middle size of that engine and slushpump 3-speed auto, a 6-seater car about the size of a Rolls-Royce so not really big, did 25 miles to a small US gallon driven gently (as many Americans drive).

Of course a woffling 7 litre Ford Limited would have guzzled a bit.

He has now ordered a new A3, delivery quoted next January.
The dealer has guaranteed a p/ex value of £3500 for the Golf GT Tdi, which by then should have around 190k on the clock.
Saves messing around trying to sell privately and he is happy with the deal.
Volkswagen Golf V - High miles, low price? - mikeyb
Sounds like a good deal. I imagine that there is very little margin in the new model A3 so i cant see that the dealer has inflated the part x price to flatter either.

Around 2 grand discount off list at DTD so offering £1,500
Volkswagen Golf V - High miles, low price? - legacylad
Thanks CGN
He is aware of discounts from DTD and such, but has had exemplary service from this dealer.
On the road with pupils Mon to Friday, so takes it in for servicing late Friday pm, collects his loaner, usually a nice new Allroad or top spec A5, then collects Sunday am before taking pupils on PassPlus for the day over the Pennines to Manchester.
