 Rear View. - Ted

I've taken delivery of 3 brand new Yarises this week, all automatwatic hybrids with sat-nav. We already have a couple on the fleet so I've given them all a few miles......nice cars.

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that, when you engage backwards gear, the scene to the rear shows up on the sat-nav screen......sounds good. I made a mental note and tucked it into my diminishing memory bank.

On Monday, I took one of the new ones into the city and had to reverse up to the front of one of our Fiestas in the double bay. It was about 5ft away. I casually looked at the sat-nav and the damn gap looked to be about 20 ft. I ignored it and did a close reverse using a shop window...my preferred method if available.

I wonder how many owners will be caught out by this, giving the car an extra touch of gas to cover the distance......which isn't there !

I imagine colour coded rear bumpers may become an ' in-stock ' item in future at the dealers !

Surely the car starts shouting urgently when you approach something Ted? Mine does and it's twelve years old.

I briefly drove a diesel Citroen C4 a couple of years ago now. It had a rearview camera when reverse was engaged, a fisheye lens view at an angle down through the rear screen. That seemed very good.

Isn't there something wrong with car design now, in that rear vision is so hopeless in many makes and models?
I find it a real pain (literally sometimes) to see out and many potential next cars have been dropped from my 'short'list for this reason.
A few years ago I drove a Bentley Continental R - nearly 18ft long - and reversed it round a narrow dog-leg into the owner's drive (he was sitting beside me!) with no trouble at all. Now you can't see out the back of something the size of a Clio estate.
My brother's girlfriend has a new RR Evoque. You can't see a darn thing behind or to the rear quarters and it has 11 - yes 11! - cameras. Bonkers.

It's compensated for by having rear proximity sensors.

Equally, lack of front and side vision, are covered by airbags.......

Only when you hit something and they go off.

My point exactly....

If you don't see something, as is more likely with thicker pillars, and less glass to look though, then you are more likely to hit, or be hit by it......

(on a motorcycle, a glance over ones shoulder is known as a 'lifesaver'
I do that in cars as well... well cars that have enough vision to so it....)

Doing a bit of extrapolation, I'm guessing that in 20 years time, there will be no rear windows in cars - just cameras linked to screens on the dashboard.

In 40 years time, cars will no longer need any glass.

"In 40 years time, cars will no longer need any glass."

Interesting idea. When you think about it the same thing could be done with houses. Grotty urban view of the neighbouring factory? Replace the windows with superb high definition screens showing a live video stream of some beautiful countryside instead.

You could live in the virtual countryside. Be a bit of a jolt when you went out but people probably won't bother with the real world in a few years

There wasn't any noise from any of the Yarises so maybe no sensors.......or they needed activating ?

I was having a coffee at one of our local bistros while having an MOT done. The place is in a row of about 12 shops with a Victorian canopy along the front.....ideal for small eateries...as indeed most of them are. His was the only one open in the morning and I commented how the parade looked like downtown Beirut with all the roller shutters down.

We both wondered if a good wheeze would be to have a sturdy roller blind with images of various shop fronts to be pulled down after the steel shutter. A bit like the garage door decorations.

It would certainly improve the look of the whole place.

Me, I'm staying out of it!

Hmmm...I did torture my brain before I decided of my version, Les.

Reading some of the posts there I still don't know.
Would anyone write ' I was waiting for a bus and two bus' came along ' ? I would write Buses.

An apostrophe seems to me to be for a possessive or when a letter/s are omitted.

Ammunition for another thread to degenerate into pedancy.

Well, after consulting a higher authority I just couldn't stay out of it any longer any longer! Ted was right. It's Yarises. grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/plurals.htm

Ted, does it not have those colour-coded 'tennis court' superimposed on the screen?
Green, yellow and red sectors.
 Rear View. - Ted

Don't know, Ian. I only gave it a glimpse, saw it was telling me porkies and resorted to the old methods.

I'll have a proper looksee next time I'm in one.

Ted

The decent ones also have a predictive function - the 'tennis court' swings on the screen as you turn the wheel, showing you where the car will be heading.
Takes some getting used to, I must admit.

Can't say it bothers me. Spent years driving estate cars full to the roof with work stuff so usually couldn't see out of either the rear, or indeed rear side windows. No bleepy things to help either.

You just have to learn how to best position and use your door mirrors and also retain some memory of the dimensions of your car/vehicle.

I expect it's the same with vans and trucks too, except they are mostly bigger of course. Even my wife can park a Transit van inch perfect using the door mirrors, and if she can do it...

C'mon peeps, getteth thee the grippingtons !

It amazes me when I see a geezer reversing a Pantechnicon into a very tight space or loading bay.

No woman could ever do something like that though, they have enough trouble parking a jamjar.

Yeah, he might even think she is buttering him up for something.

I'm up for the challenge if you are:)

I'll reverse an artic with a 45' trailer up to a wall within a half an inch and you can do it in your car Dog!

...just don't ask me to do it in the Mondeo:(

This was one of my regular deliveries back in 70's when I had to reverse my TK down the alley with literally inches to spare each side + it was on the busy junction of Old St. and Goswell Rd.

I'd have an art attack if I had to do it now though :) goo.gl/maps/z0jFw

Actually, it may have been a CF Luton when I think about it, the 1970's were a looong time ago!

I'm not that old L'es ! Although, if I thought people wouldn't snigger and make onanist comments I'd quite like to refer to my" Large Estate Car" as a shooting brake. But they would. They really would....

All this makes me glad my cut-off date for ever considering a car purchase is 1992.
I don't care what desirable features later cars may have, I'm happy with:
1) Proper profiled tyres that give a comfortable ride
2) Windscreens I can see out of
3) Space inside to swing more than a cat
4) Easy access to all mechanical components, of a design I can usually fix myself
6) No depreciation

Well I may well interest you in my best of all worlds, 2007 lancer.

If I can be parted from it.

And you perhaps think the Juke is kinda cute as well? With such tiny windows and so much metal, it's going to be hearse-like inside.

C'mon, it's not going to win any beauty contests :-)

>> It was about 5ft away. I casually looked at the sat-nav and the damn gap looked to be about 20 ft.

The rear view camera used in the Toyota system has a fisheye lens to provide a wide angle of view. Things look a lot further away than they are, but that's purely your assumption that the picture on the screen should be the same as that seen with your eyes at work. It's the same picture showing the same distance, using a different lens than the one you have in your eye. You have cue lines (the red one tells you that you can still get behind the thing and open the tail when it's against the object behind) and you can also see the bumper at the bottom of the screen.

Thus you can tell exactly how far away you are from whatever's behind you. The apparent distance in the picture is immaterial.

Edit: Can't resist the obvious cheesy gag. I have a fleet Prius with the same camera system. Since I got it, I haven't looked back..........

HeeHee, TeeCee.......It's not easy to look back in a Prius.
Why the need for a spoiler half way up the back window ?
