I dont want to comment on the sad deaths of 3 people on the A3 last nights bus crash, but I do wonder if they were going from Isle of Wight to Merseyside - what on earth were they doing on the A3 heading towards the M25 ??
Surely heading towards the M3, and up the A34 to Oxford and join the M40 would have been more logical

I know what you mean. I assumed they had got off the ferry at Portsmouth and were sent that way by satnav, or maybe the poor driver wanted to avoid all the other ferry traffic heading west on the M27, or overnight roadworks on the M3, A34, or M40. I go to Portsmouth from the Midlands fairly frequently, there's no difference in time between the M25/A3 and M40/A34 routes.

My thoughts exactly. My tom tom brought us straight up the A34 when we came home from Southampton to Manchester, so I can only assume it was the personal preference of the particular driver.
