Auto Express are reporting that the facelift fiesta will get the three cylinder turbo petrol engine. Pity it will be a detuned version and the car will gain a trout pout grille.

Interesting that the new Mondeo will also get the same engine in full fat 123bhp guise. I would love to try one of them to see if it's man enough for the job. I suspect it probably is, given that's nearly as much power as my old 2.0 petrol Mondeo used to have.

also the new Fiesta will shed weight.

A good move me thinks.
Less weight, lower emissions = less road tax.

win win all round.

Now what's vauxhall up to ?
oh yes nothing much as usual.

Well as GM are losing loadsof money in Europe.. largely due to management incompetence and a poor model array (Honda UK flat out, Vauxhall plant closed for a week).. GM are going to go backwards..

Anyone want to spend £30k on an electric car? No thanks...

How not to run a business..

Vauxhall Adam, Vauxhall Cascada, Vauxhall Mokka plus new range of engines including a 3 cylinder shortly - no nothing much really. Plus one more model than Ford consistently showing in the top 10 UK best sellers.

Also perhaps the new wonder Ford engine will help them stem their $1 billion losses in Europe: tinyurl.com/boqqo64

What blimmin awful names ... I drive a Cascada / Mokka / Adam haha flippin ha!

Vauxhall have been a bit quiet lately haven't they.

The Vauxhall Adam looks terrible, almost like that Nissan Joke (I mean juke).

There isn't much news about their 3 cylinder engines either.
Maybe they are buying them in from Ford. he he

I am still waiting for the GM hybrid, with Atkinson-cycle recharging engine, that was promised for this year. Or have I missed it? It sounded like a practical almost-electric car in the original descriptions. No doubt the price will be offputting when it appears.

The Ampera has an Atkinson cycle petrol engine?

Seems to have, yes. I did miss the HJ road tests, so thanks for that Focus.

As I feared, it is a bit dear to put it mildly but would suit even my normal requirements very well and very ecomomically. It does 0-60 in 8.something and is governed at 100, a speed one seldom reaches in this country or indeed most others. And comes with everything, phone and pratnav included.

Seddon Atkinson?

Looks nice, it's come a long way since this thing: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ford_Fiesta_MK1_front_20071023.jpg

"Also, certain dealers partaking in a new Ford Retail program will provide an "unwrapping" digital package loaded with a photograph of the buyer taking delivery of his/her new car. A 19-minute audio description of the car and its features is included, which can be played on the way home, then loaded along with its interactive program into the home computer via its USB connection"

What a load of marketing guff....

My mum's 1.1 was what I drove after passing my test - great car!

Honesty is the best policy, and, I hated the damn thing, XR2 was fun though!

I've never liked any Fiesta I've driven, they have all been harsh little cars.

But this new engine is very appealing. I'm sure it can be chipped to give ON the oomph he feels is lacking.

Why should I have to chip a car to get decent mid range performance? After driving diesels for 30 years my next car will be petrol powered and I expect to miss the torque. All I will need will be a small to medium sized car with a lot of torque and a petrol engine. Suggestions welcome, (don't damage the swear filter). :-)

I've been switching between petrols and diesels for years, and yes you do miss the torque going back to petrol. But you also soon learn to love revving them, and appreciate the extra refinement at lower speeds.

In any case, it looks to me like the latest raft of downsized turbocharged petrols all deliver pretty decent amounts of torque. Not quite diesel like, but not that far off.

You never drove a 1.6 litre Mk2 Fiesta XR2 then? www.fastestlaps.com/cars/ford_fiesta_xr2_mk2.html
I had one and it was superb.

correct me if I am wrong, wasn't the 1.6l engine in the Fiesta de-tuned to produce less power than the same engine in the escort XR3 ?

and does that practice still happen today ?
Facelift Fiesta - new engine. - Focusless
According to HJ, the 83-89 XR2 had 96bhp, while the 83-90 XR3(i) had 105(115)bhp.

Didn't have much to compare it with - learnt in instructor's Mazda 323, dad had a 1.3 Escort. I just remember 'blasting' between Alcester and Stratford-on-Avon on Thursday nights (band practise)...

You could actually see out of the back window in one of those. ARE YOU LISTENING, MANUFACTURERS?

I often think the favorite car I have ever owned was a 1990 Mk3 Fiesta that I ran for 5 years and 60 odd thousand miles. It never failed to start, was brilliantly economical, could crack 100 mph with a following wind or steep enough hill and cost almost nothing to maintain. This may have had something to do with happy personal memories of the time (marriage, 1st son born) but still, it gave sterling service, and knocked contempory hatchbacks (Metro, Nova etc) into a cocked hat, imo

I had a 1990 Mk 3 Fiesta, too. I drove it for four years, and covered about 60,000 miles - including taking it to Romania and back twice.

In fact, I had 3 successive Mk 3 Fiestas, driving them until 2002. I took the view that there really was no other car to drive.

Big back window, too.

I really enjoyed them, but I'm not convinced that any would be my favorite.

Was never a fan of having to pump a little rubber bulb next to the clutch to scoosh the screen on the Mk1 - maybe that was a ghetto spec model though.

I remember having a car with the dipswitch there, a mini I think.

It was. I have a feeling my old Minx did, as well.

I agree and I support you fully in this! I like a car with a rear window I can see out of!
tried an Insignia last year, the wife likes them and, well, seemed an OK car to me. but the rear view was like looking through a letterbox....Crep, really crep!

A few years back Fiestas has a choice of 2 engines, say 1.1, 1.3 then this extended to say 3+ diesel......................move on 30+ yrs and low and behold there are 14 (FOURTEEN) different engine specs on the latest models.

Surely overkill............this is an entry level car, or have I missed something?
Facelift Fiesta - new engine. - DP
SWMBO had a mk1 1.1 Fiesta as her first car. It was a delightful little thing apart from being an utter pig to start from cold in sub zero temperatures, or when it was damp. Never did work out why.

It was a cracking town car. Light, nippy, agile, ridiculously economical, and with excellent all round visibility, a lovely slick gearbox and clutch, and very accurate steering. Completely out of its depth on a motorway, but fortunately we only needed it to do that twice in the time we had it

Unbelievably basic though. It didn't even have a washer pump. Instead you had a big black rubber "nipple" mounted on the floor in the drivers footwell. Pumping this with your left foot delivered fluid from the washer jets. A different era. :-)

>> an utter pig to start from cold in sub zero temperatures, or when it was damp. Never did work out why<<

Probably due to a faulty 12v feed from the starter solenoid to the ignition cold start system (bit late now though)
