1974 driving on the M5 to Devon there was a bottleneck at Bridgewater where the motorway had an unfinished section, a couple of guys with those trays they used in cinemas selling pop and icecream down the sliproad and onto the carriageway.

Don't know what it's like these days, but the urban motorways in Lagos used to get logjammed for long periods every day, providing a captive clientele for street traders selling cigarettes, mirror shades, condoms, aspirins, antibiotics (used in an insouciant and harmful manner in Africa even by some medical professionals and often sold by the capsule, illegally one assumes), hats, handkerchiefs, roasted peanuts and sweetcorn, etc.
Perhaps we will be seeing a revival of such grassroots enterprise here as everything turns inexorably to excrement...
