Hi room, my BIL wants to buy a black taxi cab, he lives in Rome Italy but he likes all things british, how does one go about aquiring one ? i dont want a minter just an old still usable one
the idea is i purchase it here ( with his money) then i drive it from blighty to the eternal city
Any advice regarding all aspects of the operation would be very much appreciated......zoo

A pal of mine who worked there for 3 or 4 years took his own UK registered car to Turin and registered it there. The bureaucracy was frustrating to say the least - visiting offices in person at specified hours, translating documents etc and the time it took IIRC was barely compatible with the deadlines. You can get a flavour from this discussion -

Yours is then easy bit. It can go there on British plates, no problem, but if he wants to keep it there and use it he'll have to register it.

Get some breakdown cover!

General EU regs will allow him to keep it on UK plates for up to twelve months.

Some official commentary here, and a link that sounds as if it might be useful.

and I have no proper knowledge of the "12 month rule" but IIRC my pal who is extremely precise about these things thought it was 6 months - I can only speculate that it might be different according to whether it is actually being exported there or just temporary.

The Nissan TD-27 diesel engine was fitted to the older models a very good reliable engine with parts world wide used in many applications.

It's the rest of the thing that drops to bits e bay is your friend.

Times may have changed, but when I looked at a black FX4? a few years back it was just recently plated and OK for Taxi work. However it would not have passed a normal MoT - about 20cm of free play in the steering, shot shockers and significant rust, just for starters! So beware!

Not sure that's true - here in Austria (also an EU country), local regulations require that you re-register it within one month once you have declared prime residency here.

Mind you, you also have to jump through hoops to prove that you have the financial means to support yourself, and pay 15 euros for a certificate of residency, and that's not cricket according to EU regulations.

Austrians act like true Germans when regulations are to be enforced.
