Have just located and removed my pollen filter, the thing was full of flies and leaves. Are these things worth replacing, as I'm tempted to not bother. The air flow is much improved without it, nice cool fresh air. Am I being cynical or are these things a total waste of money? Older cars never had them and I don't recall any disadvantages other than the odd dead fly landing on me.

As a hay fever sufferer I'm rather keen on them, but if I wasn't I'd remove mine, they certainly do restrict airflow.

Those flies and leaves would be strewn all round the ducting of your heater if the filter wasn't there, should be cheap enough if you pop into a factor and pick up a Mann and Hummel jobbie.
Does a colletion of dead flies, such as seen in strip lighting diffusers give anyone else the willies?

Yeah, change it and put a new one in. The inside will be an unpleasant place without it after a while.

Well done for finding it.
Fords tend to mist up when the pollen filter is blocked.
If you like the extra airflow, you could replace it with a piece of coarse mesh which would catch the worst of the debris.
You might find the airflow is better than it was with a new filter.

Probably because it's blocked up with flies and leaves.
Like any filter, it needs changing occasionally. A new one will allow the air flow to be much improved over the old one.

If you don't fit a new one, all the crud that is on the PF will stick to the (wet) A/C evaporator, and it will soon smell like a horrible wet dog!
I hope it was easier to get out that the one (ones actually!) on the C4 Picasso - that is the worst bit of 'design' for a service item I have ever seen (well not really seen, as it mostly has to be done by feel).

T'was just behind the glovebox, 5 minute job, seen them for a tenner on e bay, though I like the idea of a mesh, will have a little think about that. Don't really need the "hepa" filter effect but a screen to keep out flies etc sounds ideal.

I think a pollen filter helps to keep the inside of the screen clean, and it helps to keep out diesel exhaust particulates.
