Got Jan 05 2litre tdi 140 auto, 78k. Tech friend who looks after it says diagnostic may be signalling turbo on way out. Gone into limp mode temporarily once so far (not dpf prob). So I may have to decide whether to buy Audi original replacement at 1000pds with vat, or recon job at under 400pds. Anyone know how risky is a recon turbo? Basically like the car and spent 600pds last year on one injector replacement. Rather keep the "lovely devil I do know" than fork out around 10000pds on not new replacement vehicle.
Thanks all.

Assuming its definately the turbo, why not get your own rebuilt by someone like Turbo Technics.
There must be other specialists who can do this work too.

Assuming it's the vanes sticking in the VNT mechanism (causes limp mode when you boot it), the turbo can be stripped, cleaned and refitted. Quite a few turbo specialists can do this on a 24 hour turnaround basis. Either that or they will send you a reconditioned turbo in exchange for your old unit.
A good reconditioned unit from a reputable outlet will come with a decent warranty, and should perform "as new".
Reckon on about £300 for the turbo, plus whatever your friend would charge to fit.

I thought the VNT was separate from the turbo? Obviously it actuates the vanes, via a linkage, but it's (IIRC) a separate unit. no need to strip the turbo down.
PS: just found this link. www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a4/VNT-wastegate-adjust.htm

OP, do you live anywhere near North London? Russell Automotive have a good reputation with Audis.

If you do need a new one, try www.turbodynamics.co.uk
I got one from then as it was half Audi's price and had the comfort of knowing it was factory fresh and latest revision of the part.
Have you looked into reclaiming the money you spent on an injector?
There has been a safety recall as it can cause cutting-out.
If this happened to you, ;) you should be able to make a claim.

Appreciate all replies, will follow up when home (N.B. am in Spain where can´t find Pound Sterling symbol on keyboard!). Re injector, yes, checked with Audi and mine wasn´t covered. They sd only 170bhp engines had the troublesome Piezos.

re Turbodyamics, now checked and their price is dearer than Audi´s!

Sometimes it is just the linkage or actuator, but more commonly it is sooted up vanes.

Yes, I believe you are correct. Memory fail. I used to have a link to a site where the VNT mechanism was illustrated but as I have no current need for a TDI, I seem to have deleted it(: However cleaning the vanes would be a lot cheaper than buying a replacement turbo. . No doubt any competent diesel specialist could clean it up and test.

What Audi price are you looking at, Hacko? Some makers - Volvo and Mercedes that I know of, but it would surprise me if not Audi too - offer significant discounts on parts and labour for repairs on older cars, to keep them in the workshop network once the pull of the warranty has gone.
If it was my car, and otherwise sound and to my liking - I wouldn't hesitate. Get some competitive quotes from dealers and independents and get it fixed. I did just this two years ago when my Volvo needed a DMF. Wasn't cheap, but it's done the job and the car's back to normal. Even twice the amount sunk into a slightly newer car would have got me nothing like the same utility or peace of mind.

Just on topic but not related to OP scenario. How do you determine if a turbo is failing?
My dads 2003 Octavia 60,000 miles is starting to develop a chirpy when off boost which he says was not present in the past. So as you drive ( you can only hear it at low speeds probably because of wind noise) you accelerate past 1500 rpm, you hear the normal turbo whistle, ease off and the noise appears. Its like a waste gate type noise but very quiet one, not sure if diesel turbos have them. It sort of lasts a second long the noise.
EDIT ** Just to add I have googled this and this YT video demonstrates the noise exactly;
www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WXRg8hiK64
Any ideas?

That sounds quite normal to me NBD, i expect the engine pulls progressively from reasonably low rpm, not like some Diesels that have nothing till about 2k rpm when it suddenly happens, most frustrating to drive the latter..
Don't know if others have found this to generally true, it is most ceratinly the case for Diesel trucks that are running well.
If the turbo gives a gentle audible whistle whilst spooling up then i've always found the engine to be running well, getting enough fuel etc.
In some vehicles i've driven to the sound of the turbo, which when the engine was running well was easier to hear than the engine.
That particularly applied to big Cummins and Landcruisers with the 3 litre 4 pot, turbo whistle louder than engine under moderate power, very pleasant sound to me.
