Volkswagen Golf V - Golf Sdi and silly neighbour: non pd oil - mattbod
Quick bit of advice needed: my lady neighbour just bought the above: manual says it needs 505.01 pd oil( didn't know non turbo engine was PD). She has however put half a litre top up of normal 10w40 Mobil stuff bought from local garage as didn't read the manual until too late.

Question is with half a litre of of non pd stuff will she get away with it or should she change her oil immediately? VW oil confusion strikes again!

she will be fine with just half a litre in. whens the next service due?

Some enough oil is better than not enough even if a bit of it isnt quite right.

In the handbook does it not say something like "if oil meeting our specs vw 50xxx is not available, then it is permissible to top up with up to 1 litre of ..." can't remember what the conditions are in the manual but pretty sure it says something like "any old oil you can lay your grubby paws on".

I seem to remember that the Roomie's handbook said something along those lines.

Fair play to the woman for:

1. Knowing how to keep an eye on the oil
2. Doing so
3. Taking appropriate action when the level dropped

They'll be allowed the vote soon you know. :-)

...They'll be allowed the vote soon you know...

Someone was bound to play the misogynist card. :)

Me? I have no problems accepting ladies are generally not interested in the oily bits, or accepting ladies that like getting under the bonnet.

Provided they've done the dishes, first.

I like to think of it more as "guidance"

That could make compelling viewing for the rest of you - in a road accident sort of way.

Usually when a woman tops of the oil it is with WD40 or gearbox oil so she is done well.

Ok enough of the woman driver jokes, I know a few that know a lot more about engines than I do :p.

If she is worried for the price of an oil change I would just change the oil otherwise there will always be a nagging doubt.

My wife had this problem when she owned the A3 Sline Quattro - she needed top up and actually tracing the correct spec of oil became a nightmare, eventually solved by AVW (a very well respected VAG Indie)in Caernarfon, none of the VAG dealers in the area carried the exact spec. I always buy a litre of oil of the right spec for whatever car/bike I'm running at the time.

Run a Ford diesel - anything with '5w-30' written on it will do.

They're not listening Iffy. You can almost feel their virtual eyes glazing over. You could get the word's finest opera tenor to sing "Fords are Magnifico" at the Albert Hall and screen it nightly on all available TV channels but they'd still prefer to buy an inferior product with another badge...........

Give up. It's a lost cause.

you can put anything with 10-40 in the Mitsubishi.

Plus I dont have to put up with the redicule of being behind the blue oval

Thanks guys car due a service soon: she didn't understand why the car needed a special oil and gave up explaining about high levels of stress in the engines top end lol :)
Volkswagen Golf V - Golf Sdi and silly neighbour: non pd oil - Zero
you need to use terms they understand. Tell its like using bio or non bio in the washing machine, not putting tap water in the iron, or using a dry shampoo for frizzy hair.

>> using a dry shampoo for frizzy hair

That's the only one that'd work on the women I know! Correct product use in washing machines, irons etc is on a par with car engine oils for them.

can it run on 710?
Volkswagen Golf V - Golf Sdi and silly neighbour: non pd oil - DP
This is partly VW's fault. Yes, the handbook mentions a VW engineering spec for oil. Not only is this number completely meaningless to the layman, but it is not mentioned anywhere that severe engine damage can result if this spec is not adhered to. Neither is there any indication under the bonnet that particular specification oil is required.

A simple label somewhere on the ample black plastic engine cover:

TO AVOID ENGINE DAMAGE, USE ONLY VW505.01 OR 507.00 SPECIFICATION OIL.

or even

STRICTLY VW505.01 or VW507.00 ENGINE OIL ONLY

would have saved thousands of these otherwise bombproof engines from premature demise. Yes, there will always be one or two idiots who ignore the most blatant warning, but most people would take notice and at least ask advice before pouring in something likely to write off their engine.

My old mk2 Cavalier had the recommended oil spec (simple API specs) stencilled on the filler cap. On a PD, the oil spec is super-critical, and I personally don't believe VW make this clear enough.

Remember buying my first Sinclair calculator in the mid 70s, white case with a red led display. Spent the next hour *impressing* all who showed interest with 5318008.

You lot have no backbone whatsoever!

You only try and wind me up in the evenings when you know I'm not around:)

It'll be fine, but the service interval will need to be shortened.
