How old when failed the MOT? - Zero
Ok to separate out - no references to the other place, there is another thread for that.

How old was your car when it failed its first MOT? and Why?

Mine

Feb 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer 52K miles.

NOt failed an MOT yet, it has had three advisories, Excessive Handbrake travel (A load of pony that one), Tyres near the limit, and rear pads near the limit.

All rectified by me.

Technically the Berlingo, Mar 2005 108k (96k at time) failed last year. NSR indicator light insufficiently orange. Garage replaced it and then passed. I wonder whether many of the 'failures' in HJ's stats are similar(ie remedied immediately) particulalry those for lighting, wipers or pads.

Neither of current fleet have ever failed on anything significant. Our 91 BX failed around 96/7 with worn rear sus bearings - a wear issue on estates particularly. In 2005 it got an advisory for same again but failed on a worn steering rack. Combination of those and other advisories for subframe and body corrosion saw it scrapped.

Civic 1.8VTi failed on rubbish handbrake at 8 yrs old and 105,000miles (was an advisory previous year and adjusted as best as it could be but I knew it was still borderline...)

CRV never failed up to the time we traded it in for the FRV at 5yrs and 80,000miles.

Current cars haven't had 1st MOT yet.

Son and I both drive Yaris Mark 1 with accumulated ages of 20 years and 170k miles. No MOT fails ever in accumulated 10 years ownership.

Watch this space ... Lancer is due this month but I'll leave it to June, she's nicer than May, or April come to that!

Adder BMW 3 series fail on rust about 9 years ago, it was an old mid 80's model though, the tester said he'd never seen a BMW with so much rust underneath, well - I did buy it from a geezer who only used it to get him to his local links course down near the Helford (Cornwall)

This year the first time in the 9 years we've had it, MB @ 16 years old and 83k miles.

Bottom ball joints replaced 2 or possibly 3 years ago following a previous advisory on one, but one of the new ones caused a fail this year.

My MB indy has seen an increasing number of cars with premature suspension joint failure and broken springs in recent years, he blames third world Northants, especially urban, roads.

Had to get the C5 MOT'd in March before it went back to the lease company - advisory that rear tyres were near the limit, but would have been shocked if there was anything else.

Mrs B's Sharan has always passed first time, although at last MOT in November at 6 years old and 75K there was an advisory for a split gaiter, and low front pads.

Also had to replace the first bulb to fail since we had it earlier in the year......perhaps its time to get rid :-)

Never had a MOT failure in 20 years of driving MOT-eligible cars, except for last year when I had 2 tie-rod ends replaced at National tyres and then went for MOT the next day at MOTMAX in Nottingham.
They failed it for he jamb nuts being insecure as they were jambed to the wrong end of the rod, but upon inspection at home they were wrong. Thank God I didn't go back to National Tyres and kick their asses> I went back to MOTMAX and didn't get so much as a sorry until I prompted them.

Nissan Almera failed at seven years with a broken spring. I'd had the wheels off and looked for such things immediately before, but didn't spot it. It had broken less than one turn in and had subsequently dropped about a centimetre. The tester nearly missed it!

The old Mondy estate ( 2002 TDCi ) got to 9 years old and just shy of 200k in my hands. Never failed an MOT, never broke down. Other than consumbles, brake discs / pads / tyres etc it never need a repair either apart from two replacement headlamp bulbs and a rubber strap thingy for the exhaust which Kwik Fit did for no charge. Less than £10 all in. Not too shabby really.

A 4 year old Datsun 180B estate, failed on a rust hole in the chassis, I was surprised, but probably shouldn't have been as it had rust just about everywhere else ! 5 year old Marina failed due to about 3" of play in the bottom trunnions. That was in 1983 and haven't had anything fail since. Last 3 cars have been new and changed at 2 years so MOT not been a concern.

I think the last MOT failure I had was on my 1993 Mk3 Cavalier Diplomat. The tester didn't like the look of one of the rear tyres. Asked me what the spare was like - "brand new mate" I replied. Quick swap over and got the 12 month ticket.

The one and only motorbike MOT failure was caused by too much play in the mono-shock linkages and bushes. New parts fitted costing £40 and the play was still there. He ended up passing the bike after discovering that he should have tested the rear suspension with weight of the bike on it (which took up any free play), and not when it was at rest on the centre stand.

My one and only MOT failure was when my 1967 Hillman Hunter failed its first MOT because there was a hole (rusted) in the floor and the underfloor strengthening member had largely rusted away.

I think I can at least equal Humph's Mondeo. My S60 has had seven MoTs and passed them all. Closest call was a stern advisory in 2010 about the scored rear discs - since replaced, of course. Only other advisory concerned the tatty, but perfectly legible, rear number plate - and I've not even had that mentioned since 2006.

Looks like I'm just ahead with my seven MOTs and No advisories, as posted yesterday on another thread.

.....And some folk would have us believe that the high mileage car is the better second-hand buy!
:)

Mastermind rules, is it, CLK? Advisories to be counted in the event of a tie? Actually, that should be inverse Mastermind rules, since passes count against you there.

Good point WdB. :)

Bet your uncle's 180 wouldn't have got anywhere near your seven MOT passes.

I was 17 when my first car failed its MOT.
It was a 1954 Triumph Mayflower, and failed on a worn slave steering relay. A local engineering shop re-bushed it for £2.

My Focus hatchback passed four or it might have been five MoTs with no bother.
