Tesco Cars calls it a day - mikeyb
Just read that Tesco has pulled the plug on its car sales venture.

Website closed with this statement:-

We started Tesco Cars in good faith and we always aim to do a good job for customers. However, following a review of the business model we and Carsite, our partner, have decided that we cannot offer customers a satisfactory range of vehicles and as a result, have decided it is right to close the business.

Quick look on the net reveals that they were selling 150 cars a month - carsite were doing 125 without the Tesco branding. Cant imagine that was anywhere near the volume they were expecting - the business plan was 40K sales per annum by year five.

How many people actually knew about the scheme? Very few I suspect.

I think the biggest problem was the fact all the cars were white with blue stripes.....

I think there is a general back lash against Tesco full stop. I will buy food products there but that is it.

Supermarket are like empires - they rise and fall. Fifties and sixties belonged to the Co-Op. Seventies and Eighties saw the rise of Sainsburys and the last two decades have belonged to Tesco.

Do you think we will start to see a decline of Tesco? Certainly my area is swamped with Co-Ops (being in Manchester!) and Tesco.

Now is the rise of the discounters - our local ALDI is always pretty full these days.

I (unusually for me) followed an advert link to Tesco cars a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't impressed by the range on offer but they did have a few Audi A6s that seemed worth a look. But there were no photos - just 'library pictures', and I know what an A6 looks like; I want to know what this one looks like - and no option to view anything locally.

It just seemed an uncharacteristically halfarsed job by Tesco, when its other offerings - insurance, Tesco Direct etc - are so well thought through.

I tried to buy one but half the checkouts were closed, and the other half had 30 minute queues.

You can't pull the wool over our eyes; we know where you never shop!

Tesco now are like Asda in mid 1990s. Walmart used Asda profits to fund expansion elsewhere: Asda UK stagnated with highish prices and grotty stores.

Tesco are using UK profits to fund losses in US and expansion elsewhere.. Prices are uninspiring and stores dull and uninteresting.

And their Christmas "price drop" was cynical exploitation as after it they were still expensive.

They have lost the trust of many UK shoppers: takes years to regain it.

Personally they deserve to lose much more market share: and will.

We rarely shop there and only for little value.

Wasn't a fairly major problem with Tesco Cars the fact that you needed to cough up a non-refundable £100 deposit to look at the car?

That will be when one is not dining in the Officers' Mess, I presume.

I'm not quite sure where our groceries come from. I know my wife arranges it somehow. She's jolly good at it I'm sure. Same with laundry and so on. Sometimes things are missing from the wardrobe for a day or two after one has worn them but generally not for any inconvenient length of time.

You just can't get the staff these days.

Well, on reflection, there was an English mustard deficit issue a couple of months back but she apologised, rectified the situation and there haven't been any problems since. I saw no cause to scold unreasonably for such a minor blip.

Was £50,000, Now just £25,000
TESCO ||| every little helps....

It might fool people with washing detergent, but people are more fickle with cars.

Might be a collectors item :-

"Tesco Value has been shelved. Its blue and white stripes have passed their sell-by date. The bargain brand has checked out."
