If or when toll roads are built will they be an indirect tax on speed?

i am not sure if this true and i hope someone can answer for me but i was led to believe the french toll roads can fine drivers for arriving at the next toll road too quickly.

i.e. speeding between toll booths

would be quite believeable if true.
something for our future toll roads then!

The toll road operators dont fine them - the old bill do, that's why they wait at the toll booths,

Surely when you know your entrance ticket is timed that if you arrive before legally possible you are up for nick?

The tendency on the M42 toll has been for people to be charged with exceeding the progressively reducing speed limits on the approach to the toll booths. They drive up at speed and brake sharply at the last minute.

I was thinking from the point of view that if you choose to pay to use a toll road to get from A to B quicker (faster), having already paid through taxation for the road network you are paying twice, not that VAT (tax) on a tax is anything new. Although you would be paying a private company that owned the road the government would get a slice of the income. Of course you could be done for speeding as well. :-)

Sometimes failing to stop at all causing big pileups into the booths.

They can, but rarely do...and you can usually see them at the booth, so you can pull over and faff. It's only the hopelessly unaware that will get caught out by that.

'Tis true I believe, having heard this from French colleagues. The answer is a packet of cigarettes, the vehicle's odometer and a watch.

Set trip meter on odo and note time when joining the autoroute. Prior to reaching your exit, pull into an "aire". Look at trip meter, consult watch, perform simple mathematics. Smoke cigarettes until desired average speed is achieved.

Why not drive at, or just below the speed limit?

Does that not work? less hassle and cheaper on fags,

Or............. just drive at the speed limit?

There is already a speed tax, the faster you drive the more fuel you use = more tax to pay!

if the road is privatly owned and you pay to use it, why should there be speed monitoring by the old bill, its private property?
 Speed tax. - Meldrew
It may be "private" but one must have excise duty disc, insurance, applicable MOT and a roadworthy vehicle; the law of the land applies and I guess from time to time the speed measurers are present.

I was once pulled over by les flics at the last toll on the A26 to Calais, having beeen going very fast indeed.

I felt rather smug as we had stopped for a bite to eat, so I was sure the average was Ok. Then he said

Aaah M Coulthard (French humour) didn't you see the radar

....oops
