Speed limit for 'Pollution' - Boxsterboy
Driving down the A1 into Paris this evening the speed limit was reduced to 110 kmh and then 90 kmh for 'Pollution'. The air looked the same as normal to me. I wonder if shops and offices are told to turn their lights and heat down or off as well, or do the French see the motorist as the same easy target that our politicians do?

This could be a sign of things to come. i.e speed limits to combat global warming.

Presumably the logic is lower speed = lower fuel consumption and lower emissions? Wouldn't surprise me that Paris is polluted - I always see a huge brown haze over the city when driving in to the region, or even flying over, on a dry day. All though diesel engines y'see...

Surely, Lower speed means, lower gear + in area longer = MORE pollution?

No.

Lower speed = more miles per gallon = less pollution over a set distance (to a point, I believe once you go below about 30-35mph fuel ecomony and emissions start to suffer in most cars).

I think the Greeks (forward thinking nation....) tried banning cars from Athens depending upon reg numbers - odd numbers one day, even numbers the next, etc.

All that happened was people bought a smokey old banger with the other plate so they could keep driving into the city = worse pollution.

So, rather than a NO, that's a YES in answer to my comment.

Dunno if you have ever noticed but speed limits in towns is normally 30mph, or in some places 20mph.
Then you have 'traffic calming' that slows traffic even more....

And before someone else says it..... I do understand that excess speed in towns is dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists, but that is a different argument for lower speeds....
