So This is "The Big Society" - Meldrew
I thought this sounded like a good idea, although much seems to have happened yet. The idea of local communities and individuals working together for the common good. Here is an example of how well it is working - NOT.

At the end it says that the man could be sued if people injured themselves due to his repairs. So who do they sue when they are injured due to the lack of repairs?

One of the comments ~

"Someone find these council numpties, put them in stocks and then sack them. The guy is improving the lane and you want to fine him because you can't cut back on your prawn sandwiches to cover the cost"

Its the kind of civic minded people who need applauding. However we arrived at a situation like this, it was the wrong path and its not the kind of big society id like to live in. It needs changing.

Now this is the kind of big society people I really like. Fair play to her.

Obviously there was something, perhaps not fully explained in the paper, about the way he was taking photos that security should perhaps have engaged with. But it was stuff found as a consequence that nailed him.

It's a pretty thin line for stores etc to tread. Plenty of other cases where security have been over zealous with people taking pictures and been labelled as jobsworths by the Mail.

Depends what you take pictures of. Taking them of random kids in a public place is somewhat removed from taking them of your own kids.

As an inveterate photographer who often carries a camera I find this sort of thing slightly disturbing. That said I have never been tempted to take pictures of children in a supermarket.

There seems to have been a decline in reported cases of police officers asking for names and addresses of people taking pictures in the street, thank goodness.

Somebody should give the 'journalist' who wrote that article a dictionary so that she can look up the meaning of 'interject'.

From a professional photographers forum.

Despite the law being clear on a citizen's rights to freely take pictures in public places (with a few restrictions) there is growing evidence of the police, police community support officers (PCSOs), security guards and general jobsworths failing to respect the rights of photographers going about their lawful business.

Further to this a policeman or a security functionary cannot confiscate your camera nor require you to delete an image already taken

I believe that in a few circumstances there can, e.g. when the camera contains evidence which may be destroyed if not kept safe by the police.

They can still not delete an image. That in itself would be a crime - destroying evidence or criminal damage?

The Mail must have made that up. It's not possible for anybody, even a council employee, to be so stupid is it?

They might have exaggerated a bit anyway. The DT reported the council as saying that he had previously used bricks and rubble, which could be considered as fly tipping. Is it possible that they tried to put him on the right track and he took the huff? It's not really credible that they threatened to do him for using small stuff to fill 18" deep potholes is it?

It's the Daily Mail ! - there's a local story to Anglesey in yesterday's online version. A complete travesty of the reality in fact it's a big fat lie, with properly audited and factual evidence to the contrary. At least the second time in recent months where a story from this area has been completely mis-reported either by design or by lazy Londoncentric hacks.
