The Search for Cheap(er) Car Insurance - Meldrew
I have spent the best part of the day on the telephone and internet looking for comprehensive insurance for my partner's 7 year old 206, resident in Berkshire, garaged overnight, 3 x 10 mile round trip per week commuting to work and 6000 miles a year.

In brief, the best comparison site quote was £375, the ones who said come direct to us 'cos we aren't on comparison sites were anything up to £750 and none were below £375. I finished up with Aviva at £298. All I can say is one needs a lot of time but, if one has it, it is worth the effort!

Was that cheaper with their 15 weeks free offer?

My daughter just took out insurance with them - everyone else was £400+, they were under £300. She did it through Quidco and thinks she'll get £50 cashback too. She mentioned the other day it had gone up to £80 but I just looked and it seems to be £40 now.

Yes it was - 10 weeks because they felt like it and another 5 weeks for being on line. I haven't used Quidco but thanks for the heads up.

I'm not into these things at all, but daughter tell me Topcashback is offering £65 at the moment.

I must be thick.......

The cheapest comparison site was £375.
The cheapest non comparison website was not less than £375.

So how and where did you find Aviva at £298?

I just kept going thru the ones who weren't on comparison sites, RIAS, Castle Cover, Direct Lline et al. I remembered Aviva (Norwich Union as was) and they came up with the goods. Putting a 52 and a 72 year old on as named drivers brought the quote down about £5. It was just a bit of persistence, a bit of luck and a lot of time. The firms advertising cheap insurance for over 55, 60 and 65 were the worst. Many people I rang admitted they were not insurers per se but acting as brokers for others

Tesco car insurance won again for us. Around £250 fully comp for the Panda: the highest quote was for nearly a grand!

I went to Aviva to put my own details in, after yesterday's success with my partner's insurance. To my surprise they were about £25 more than SAGA, my current insurer.

I put quality above price.

I regard the Aviva group as a quality provider of financial services. One has little idea of what any insurance company is like until one tries to get money from them (making a claim) rather than paying them the premium!

Is it possible to get insurance through a company abroad i.e. EU countries, and use it for UK roads?

Yes, my parents are insured with a spanish co. Because they spend a lot of time in spain, it was less hassle (and less money) than trying to get extended european cover from an Englsih insurer. But the insurer has to be 'approved' by the UK.

Additional Info. A colleague pointed out to me that some companies give Continental cover but that it is sometimes only TPFT. My SAGA policy gives me 90 days a year within the EU but the keen quote I got with Aviva for my partner needs £26.50 for 90 days upgrade to fully comp in the EU. Won't concern her but could be something for us to bear in mind when getting quotes and cover

My wife has been with Aviva for 15 years or so, and has made a couple of claims in that time. Both were sorted without fuss. It helps that their local approved bodyshop is local and good.

We did have a slight issue where my wife took the curtesy car with her to see her mum for a few days, and the car was ready whilst she was away. Fortunately she had told Aviva she was going away and they'd said OK. They went back to the tapes of the call to verify her story though.

We also had another claim where the car was hit in a carpark by an old chap who drove away. Aviva fixed her car but didn't seem to make much effort to trace the chap, so it ended as a claim on her record. To be fair, I suspect most insurance companies are similar.

Have renewed both ours with Elephant in the last few weeks. Both have gone DOWN this year, and for the level of cover no one else can get close. Have been with them at least 5 years probably longer, can't remember!
