Nissan has announced a plan to revive Datsun as a low-cost marque, 31 years after removing it from its line-up.
Before you all get excited - Datsun models will be sold in Indonesia, Russia and India.
The bit I do not recall is ...
"The car was named DAT, transcribed in Japanese as "Datto", which is said to indicate "running at the speed of a hare" in Japanese."
Tortoise ?

The name was created in 1931 by the DAT Motorcar Co. for a new car model, spelling it as "Datson" to indicate its smaller size when compared to the existing, larger DAT car.
Later, in 1933 after Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. took control of DAT Motorcar Co., the last syllable of Datson was changed to "sun", because "son" also means "loss" (損) in Japanese, and also to honour the sun depicted in the national flag, hence the name "Datsun" : Dattosan (ダットサン Dattosan?)

Thank goodness I do not have to clean that badge on ( in characters) on the boot lid of a car.

I had a Datsun 240Z in the 1980's, great looking car, even now www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=161&i=21430
The colour was metallic jade green (and rust) and I managed to bend it twice!
Once when I was sozzled and skidded on ice, and another time when I skidded into the back of a lorry - didn't know anything about tyres back then, they were black rubber things that you'd check the pressures on, once in a blue moon :)
Swopped it in eventually for a Toyota Corona 2L auto.

I had a Datsun Sunny back in the eighties. Not the speediest of vehicles or the most fun to drive but boy was it reliable after all the UK produced vehicles I had up to then.

At least Elsans don't rust.

What engine platform are they 8 valve push rods like the old ones A15 / H20 etc?
|
I think the Elsan is single cylinder :-)

|
..........exhaust driven?

Basic toilet arrangements reminds of a country show I went to.
It was at Alwinton in Northumberland - the last eight or ten miles to the village is a dead end road, so it's about as remote as you can get in England.
The gents was a slatted pallet slung over a brook.
Someone keeled over in the showground, so they summoned the air ambulance helicopter.
It landed in the small ring, which was very exciting, although it did interrupt the Cumbrian wrestling.

the 120y datsun was very popular in my neck of the woods driven almost exclusively by one particular section of our community....they do know a good car when they see one, none of that rover rubbish for them
