Condition of air filter, and spark plugs?
All the breather system (hoses and valves etc) all clean?
|
yeah all that stuff appears in order
its like whatver is there to stabilise the idle is a bit slow/clogged up
|
ok... vacuum leak somewhere?
|
On my Escort with the Zetec 16v engine it was the vacuum hose from the inlet manifold round the front to the PCV that caused exactly this problem - check all pipes very carefully for chafing or wear is my recommendation. Better to do it with a cold engine and a bright torch.

ok i will have another look , nothing obvious jumping out at me though

Although the idle control valve is clean,it could still be the cause of your problem. There is only one breather hose on a 1.6 focus that gives problems and it runs under the inlet manifold.Usual symptoms of a perished breather are surging/hunting at idle and often brings on engine mil light. Also possible fault with road speed sensor can give similar fault.hth

anything further i can check or do on the idle valve? i sprayed it with carb cleaner not that it was filthy
would it be worth soaking it over night

When I was in the mobile car tuning game (14 years) I always used to take the trunking orf the throttle body and clean the critter out using STP carb cleaner thoroughly, and being I had an exhaust gas analyzer etc. (Crypton),
I could see the before and after results.
Of course, I packed the game up in 92, so whether that applies to modern systems, I know not.
