 BMW 3-Series E90 - 09 2 Power without accelerator - zippy
Hi,

I have a poverty spec 316D, which is actually surprisingly good.

The odd problem that I have is that when driving when I take my foot off the accelerator, power is still being provided. This is new (had the car from new) and is quite disconcerting especially when braking or going through a gap.

Not that I would do it, but if I were driving along a flat road in 6th, if I took my foot off the accelerator but did not change down, I would eventually stall the car. The problem is that this does not happen at the moment and the car keeps going, albeit slowly.

When stopped the car ticks over at about 800RPM and it has done 19k miles, 14 of them in the last six months.

The car does not have cruise control.

Any advise appreciated!

Thanks

Zippy? is this your first diesel?

This behaviour is typical of a modern common rail diesel. It has far more torque at tickover than a petrol engine, and the engine management electronics will try and stop a car stalling.

So yes you get this apparent effect.

Thanks, so I need to change down sooner, did not happen in warmer weather, so might the engine management be adjusting for the cold weather that we are having?

First for a while, I had an Escort in the early '90s it was truly awful. Then 2 Rover 220's (both shapes) but since all petrols.

Last car was 3.2l tiptonic petrol and so this is a bit of a come down, but surprisingly drivable even though the ESP is far too over sensitive (it lights up on every man hole cover).

Though on mine I have the vague feeling I might be upside down in a ditch if it wasn't so trigger happy...

...and the engine management electronics will try and stop a car stalling...

If I'm not paying attention, I sometimes let the CC3 (2.0 diesel) slow down too much in 6th on the over-run.

When it reaches the geared speed for tickover, there is a feeling of 'power without accelerator' as described by the OP.

I've always thought it's a function of the anti-stall part of the engine management.

The answer, as mentioned, is to change down earlier.
