 Volkswagen Polo V - 2012 1.4 - Auto Gearbox - maltrap
My 2012 Polo 1.4 automatic which I’ve owned from new has given me 36000 miles of trouble
free motoring has developed a fluid leak. My local indi’ had it on their ramp and said the fluid
was coming from a plastic breather cap on the auto gearbox. They recommended an automatic transmission specialist20 miles away, I will ring them Monday. Any useful suggestions would be
appreciated

Is it a DSG?

Yes it is.
But it has given me 12 years & 36000 miles of trouble free service.

Just interested, not making a point. Ours in a 2014 Roomster has done 48,000 without breaking.

This might bear on it - I can't really grasp what it's about TBH.

Thank you for your help
When I phoned the auto gearbox specialist on Saturday he did an on phone diagnosis & thought
It would cost £1300 +vat. I’m ringing the main man tomorrow. Thanks again.

By the sound of it, the oil leaking out the breather is a sign that the Mechatronics unit (which is the hydraulic control unit for the gearbox) has failed internally and is leaking into the gearbox where it shouldn't. Replacement appears to be the cure hence the cost, most of which is the unit I suspect, I think it's only a couple of hours to change it.

Thank you for your reply.
The gearbox was,and still is working perfectly normally, just leaking?

Just been to specialist who put the car on the code reader and confirmed it was the mecatronics unit. About £1600 Inc.Booked in for Thursday.Thank you for your knowledgeable advice.

Ouch!

Presumably this fault is age / number of gear changes related, hence the failure at relatively low mileage. These sort of boxes really are a pig in a poke....

If you are interested in what is involved, here is you tube vid from a guy in Ireland that has just done one on an A3 (slightly different fault, but the procedure will be the same). The first few mins is about the replacement - after that he gets into the difficulty in programming it!

I’ve read all the horror stories regarding DSG gearboxes,if the fix gives me another 12 years of
Troublefreee (touch wood)motoring I’ll be happy.Due to my age and physical limitations I wouldn’t dream of tackling the job myself.thanks for your interest.

The mechatronic unit is a known weak point on DSGs, usually at much higher mileage though. I've had three cars with the DSG 'box (Superb, Eos and Octavia) and it was in the back of my mind with all of them.

I’m 77 years old,if I get another 12 years out of my Polo it should see me out!
Fingers crossed.

A customer has a T-reg Passat estate on just over 200k miles. He bought it new when he retired!

When I bought my car from new I always avoided keeping the car in gear whilst stopped at traffic lights, junctions etc (mainly because of the DSGs reputation) could this be cause of the mechatronic failing after 39000 miles?
