Ford Fiesta - 97 1.3 keeps over reving when dipping the clutch - RattleandSmoke
I had a 40 mile journey last night and the car kept over reving by itself. Every time I slowed down for lights or traffic the car would rev to about 4000 rpm even though I had no foot on the throttle.

The car idles between 800rpm and 1100rpm and it is random, it makes no difference if the car has has been running for half an hour or not. However it always idles at 1100 rpm when cold which suggests the temperature sensor is working fine.

I do not want to spend a penny on this car so I am hoping there is a simple fix I can do myself, I have already spent £100 replacing the discs and pads because one of the pads was hevily scorted to the point the brakes hardly worked.

The other problem is the car drives by itself, e.g if I am doing 30mph and take the foot of the throttle the car continues at 30mph. I was going down hill yesterday (not that steep) but with lots of twisty roads and I had to keep my foot on the brake all the time, in my old car I just eased off the throttle and no breaking was required.

Where do I start in trying to fix this? The symptons are almost like a stuck throttle cable but then it seems to idle perfectly.

I am starting to think this is a funny sort of ECU issue. I just unplugged the idle control valve and tried to start it, it behaved normally and refused to start. A fault would have been logged in the ECU. I then reconnected it, dipped the clutch and no more over revving. I took it round the block and it ran perfectly.

Thinking about it the fault started after I took the battery out for recharging.

You definitely have to be careful after reconnecting the battery. Sometimes there is a set procedure that must be followed, although I'm not aware of one for this car. I had a 98 Fiesta and changed the battery on that no problem, although that was the 1.4 Zetec.

I think the engine is just too complicated, trying to make a 40 year old engine block comply with modern emission regulations was never going to be easy.

Just done five miles in it today and its running like a dream, I just hope it stays that way.

If it stays that way I can put off buying a new car until I can save up more for a deposit.

A failure of the vehicle speed/road speed sensor can also send this system haywire. These early fiestas had a sensor fitted in-line with the speedo cable(gearbox end),so the speedo would read ok but the sensor would not transmit any signal to the engine ecu, thus giving idle/overrun issues.hth

Did somebody call....?

Welcome. I hope this site doesn't cause your PC to go into meltdown, unlike another one I won't mention.

Thanks.

The unmentionable site fried the CPU on my last PC; so I've built myself another one since - even faster. So far, so good.....

Wow its true, flash really can kill a processor! Just an update on this, done 70 miles since 'fixing it' and its still fine so hopefully its cured for a bit.

Its almost nice to drive now its running properly.

R+S

Just for interest; what fuelling does it have - there are lots of versions on the 1.3.

Is it a single point - in which case what make - or a multi-point?

I think its multipoint because its a Euro II standard engine. This is a picture I took of the engine bay about 26 months ago. Ignore the labels it was just because I needed clarification of what sensor I was looking at last time this problem occured all that time ago.

Yes; that's a J-series multipoint. On one of those; if it's not a gummed-up idle valve, then checking the TPS centre-pin voltage would be the next step.

But if it's not broke - don't fix it.

Hello yourself.

I'm not that exciting - honest!

I had this problem, and I thought I would share this for others, Temporary fix is to remove the plug of the Throttle position sensor and you can drive fine with it unplugged however the revs may dip at traffic lights etc. Most people say its TPS sensor or the mas airflow sensor is the problem and still have problems after replacement.

But there is one more sensor that no-one seems to know about and is the gear box speed sensor and it is well hidden, a pig to get to, and hard to get hold off. google image fiesta mk4 gearbox speed sensor, there is only one picture of it. Good luck

No luck needed, the car has probably been turned into coca-cola cans by now! Thanks though. What did make it run a lot better though was cleaning out the throttle body. Never cured it but it did make it more manageable.

My Zetec-engined Escort did that, albeit to a lesser extent. Never mind, it's long gone too :)
