I had a 40 mile journey last night and the car kept over reving by itself. Every time I slowed down for lights or traffic the car would rev to about 4000 rpm even though I had no foot on the throttle.
The car idles between 800rpm and 1100rpm and it is random, it makes no difference if the car has has been running for half an hour or not. However it always idles at 1100 rpm when cold which suggests the temperature sensor is working fine.
I do not want to spend a penny on this car so I am hoping there is a simple fix I can do myself, I have already spent £100 replacing the discs and pads because one of the pads was hevily scorted to the point the brakes hardly worked.
The other problem is the car drives by itself, e.g if I am doing 30mph and take the foot of the throttle the car continues at 30mph. I was going down hill yesterday (not that steep) but with lots of twisty roads and I had to keep my foot on the brake all the time, in my old car I just eased off the throttle and no breaking was required.
Where do I start in trying to fix this? The symptons are almost like a stuck throttle cable but then it seems to idle perfectly.
