Deep rumble from front end, not engine related as it is still there when coasting with the engine off. Wheel bearing, perhaps?

yes. Does the noise change when you move steering wheel from side to side?

If its rumbling you should feel it if you jack it up and spin a road wheel by hand

Probably the opposite side to which you'd think.
If it disappears when you steer left, then it's probably the LH side and vice-versa.

That's what happens, looks like the left hand bearing then.

I think you will find that this requires a complete hub assy change,as the bearing is not replaceable as a separate part.

They are about 100 quid each, bout an hours labour per side.

Yours are most likely 4 stud hub units and if its the nearside one, I think you'll need the one with the abs 'ring' as it also acts as the speed sensor whether or not ABS is fitted.
