Hi
My Son has a problem when starting - when he inserts the key and turns to start, all he gets is a red key light on the dash that flash's. If he tries again, sometimes it will start without problems - other times he has to remove the key and try again and it works.
I did think that maybe the battery needed changing in the plip but it seems to unlock the car at quite a distance, so i think the battery is ok.
Anyone out there have any idea what it could be?
Thanks

I have posted this on 'the other' site, so apologies in advance if you may have replied to this question on there already.

What happens with the spare key?

AFAIK he only has the one - but will find out tonight and get him to try it.

Sounds more like the transponder receiver (a ring around the ignition lock, usually behind the steering column cowling) has developed an intermittent wiring fault.
The chip in the key that gets recognised by the car isn't battery powered - it's similar in function to the tags on expensive items in shops that set off the detectors by the door. Nothing to go wrong there.
(I've seen snapped key heads duct-taped to steering columns so that a cheaply cut copy key would still start the engine!)

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the info. If I get a new transponder does it need programming by the dealer or is it just the bit that picks up the info so I can fit & forget. I think I'll look at the wiring plug and check to see if anythings loose.
Again thanks

Hi all,
Just to update you...... I looked at his key and it looked like it came apart - so opened it up and it does indeed have a battery. This was changed and all is now functioning fine.
I thought I'd let you all know as feedback is valuable.
