Hi, I get severe juddering and wheel wobble at around 70mph in my Audi. I have had laser alignment done at a specialist and all 4 wheels balanced at a fast fit place, neither of which have solved the problem.
Is it worth getting the wheels balanced by a specialist, perhaps on the car, rather than off the car?
Also, any other ideas as to what is causing this? The fast fit place assured me that the wheels were not buckled.
Thanks all

It can still be out of shape, even though balanced.
Start swapping with the spare, one by one, and see if it makes a difference.

Buy two new tyres from one of the well known brands, stick them on the front and get them balanced. If that does not cure it move the wheels and tyres from front to back.
|
Thanks both.
1, it does not have a spare (a can of gunk, useless!)
2, I have two new fronts, balanced at the time, but no difference
I will try swapping fronts to back this evening. Swimbo is driving it to Norfolk this weekend and I will not hear the end of it if I don't get it fixed.
Thanks again.

If the tyre swap doesn't fix it, it might be worth trying to find a VW/Audi specialist (and I don't mean a main dealer).
I'm thinking about things like wishbone bushes, drive shafts, even the steering rack. I don't know whether these cars have any 'common' faults but a specialist is more likely to put a finger on it than somebody playing parts darts.
With luck it will be an out-of-round tyre!

Get them rebalanced. I'm guessing this is a front wheel drive car? What can happen is new tyres can slip on the rim to it if you've been too heavy with the loud pedal before they have a chance to properly adhere.

Thanks Vxfan. It is actually 4wd.

If you have bent wheels or an out of round tyre, and you move them to the back, you may still get a wobble or judder but it will be a very noticeably different wobble or judder

Booked in to the TT shop in Bedford first thing tomorrow. With a bit of luck they will identify the problem. Wifey is driving It to Norfolk tomorrow evening and will not be amused to be restricted to 60 odd mph. I will report back.

Well, I went to The TT Shop in Bedford yesterday. Very good service. Turns out the car has been in a shunt prior to my ownership and although it has been fixed with Audi parts, the drivers side prop shaft is slightly bent and needs replacing. £600 incl VAT, ouch

Ya know, I was thinking along those lines, but I didn't want to worry you unduly, just in case.
At least y'all got it sorted, albeit at some cost!
|
Not yet sorted Dog, parts to be ordered and I needed the car this week for holiday. Safe to drive, at least it is if you don't go over 70 (which I would never do of course).

Shame I don't check in here as much as I used to. My words of wisdom would have been:
1) VAG cars suffer with bent driveshafts, bet it's that.
2) Take it to the TT Shop in Bedford.
Better late than never...
