Does anyone know if my car has a timing belt or chain?
It's a diesel.

Thank you. I've read so many different things on t'web I was despairing of ever finding out. Even rang the local dealer who didn't return my call. Are the chains maintenance free? I believe other Hyundai's have a hydraulic tensioner. The car has 26k on the odometer.

At this mileage so far,I don't think you are ever going to get any where near a worn chain.Keep a good service of oil and filter at regular intervals and no maintenance reqd.

Now I am confused. The dealer rang me back and I emailed them the VIN and engine numbers. He says its a belt with a 50,000 lifespan.

Earlier 3 cylinder (12 valve) 1.5 diesel was chain I think.

Later 4 cylinder (16v) appears to have a belt.
