 Volkswagen Passat - 03 1.9 Intermittent power loss. - dave3609
I have an intermittent power loss on my 1.9TDi Diesel. I have changed the Air Mass meter had the EGR cleaned and a Solenoid pressure control valve replaced and the problem remains. I have made enquiries locally and have two contacts with the same problem. The solution they have is to turn the ignition off briefly and the full power returns. One of these contacts has removed the EGR completely. This does not solve the problem.
The solution so far is as above and quite reliably the power returns. But wishing to sell my Passat Estate I need to resolve the issue.
Any thoughts please?
N.B. One of my contacts towed his caravan all the way to the Pyanees too, switching the ignition off and on again was a reliable cure.

Presumably the ECU is detecting a fault and putting the engine into limp mode. On restart, the fault, which is almost certainly transient, is not detected so engine runs at normal output.

What led you to look at air mass meter EGR etc, 'Likely cause' diagnosis or have you been able to get a fault code downloaded? Does the problem occur in an identifiable circumstance such as heavy acceleration or prolonged high speed running?

Could be a turbo issue.Take a look here;answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100819071759AAFug4E

Thanks for your comments. I have had three Passat TDis and on one of the previous models the Air Mass meter was the fault, so I just changed it tyo my cost. I have asked around and found three other suffering the same issue. One, drove to the Pyranees towing a caravan knowing the problem existed but quite confident that to sw off and on again re- sets it. Another has taken off the EGR and run without it and the problem still occurs.

You really really need to have the error codes read. No good guessing or throwing parts at it.

There are no engine management error codes! No warning lamp! I had that checked. after the second time of power loss whilst on holiday in Cornwall. That mechanic was puzzled - he checked the turbo pressure throughout the rev range and it was perfect. He changed the ECR solenoid valve as he detected a slight leak in that.

Apparently the guy locally who removed the the EGR on his 1.9Tdi Golf would probably have had access to engine management computer-I'll try to contact him and ask him personally as I was told about him from a 2nd hand source.

In addition to the above and in response to your question when does it happen?
The first time was a few seconds after pulling away from a T junction. The second time- After stopping for a comfort break on the M5 coming home from Wales towing the caravan. Started engine and immediately noticed power loss.It was then, after limping towards home, I stopped (switching off the engine) in a lay by to check my jockey wheel on my caravan was fully inflated as I had had a slow in it. When I pulled away again the fault had disappeared. It was at that point I realised that to correct the fault all I had to do was turn the ignition off to rectify the fault. This was exactly what my other contacts locally had found. THree people with the same problem and the same method of rectifying it.

If this is the same engine as the A4/A3 1.9tdi then search for that;

For example...
