SAAB 9-5 - 01 3.0 3.0 diesel bad misfire at all revs - nice but dim
A relative of mine has recently bought a Saab 9-5 3.0 diesel and he is experiencing a severe misfire at all revs. I havent much information on the problem, only that he has had a service done and the oil was topped up (not changed). The fault wasnt present when picked up or the return journey home and that was a good run (Perth to Derby). The car has done a fair few miles (150,000) but I'm told the mechanical and exterior condition do not give that impression.

I have read that these engines need good oil and also can suffer from injector and fuel pump issues. I believe these are common rail systems and maybe suffer from carp in fuel lines? I was also noted that if you run these low on fuel it can exhibit a similar problem.

Have you guys any ideas that I can suggest he looks at?

I don't know really but i think the prognosis for misfiring diesels is normally summed up as "expensive"!

As i understand it, the first step for a lot of problems like this with diesels is just an automatic "put on a new fuel filter" and take it from there.

I guess it depends on how much they're willing to have a go themselves. If they're handy with a spanner then a look on the saab forums would probably give some concrete things to check.

If they're not really sure at all, probably worth seeking out an expert. Someone who advertises as a Diesel specialist (e.g. not main dealer or general garage) then whack their name into google for a feel of what they might be like.

With these, they get gummed up if not driven hard ( and its easy not to drive them hard)

SO I would give it an italian tune up, ie when hot rev it to the red line a few times and do 5 miles on high revs.

Failing that

EGR, Turbo, Injectors, Pump.

My money is Fuel filter or Injectors. I hope he has a fat wallet to keep this thing running,

I take it from the comment "only that he has had a service done and the oil was topped up (not changed)." that the car has not been properly serviced so start with the cheap things:

Air filter? Clean?
Fuel filter? Has it ever been changed? If not in last 50k miles, change it.

That's cheap..

Then assume the EGR valve is gummed up.. Injector cleaner in diesel, Italian tune.

That's cheap.

After that.. well it's a dignostic job....

Start with the cheap and easy ones first...
