I had my cam belt changed yesterday and after driving the car on a test run, the garage advised the turbo may be a bit sooty. Symptons are sluggish acceleration at low revs followed by a surge. I had noticed a drop off in performance but put it down to a worn throttle position sensor but the guy thinks the turbo may be sooted up and need cleaning as the variable vanes aren't working correctly.
Apart from removal and cleaning or replacing, has anyone tried using one of the many spray cleaners available?

I'm pretty sure the 2.0 HDi 8V doesn't have a variable vane turbo (which is what the garage is hinting at) - instead it uses a vacuum controlled variable waste gate to give variable boost. Might be the MAF giving false info - If you got it on Peugeot Planet you can check the live data for boost / air flow etc etc. Getting the turbo out (on a Xantia anyway) is next to impossible with the engine in, so that would be your last point of call!!

Ok thanks. I will do some further research. If the MAF sensor is faulty presumably it could get picked up on a diagnostic check?

Yes and no!! It doesn't often set a fault code, so a scan with a generic fault reader will miss it. However, if you use Peugeot Planet, you can look at the live data for the air flow, it should rise nice and linearly with revs. If it stays the same, or jumps about then it is suspect. I have a feeling that the idle reading should be about 400 units (whatever they are!). Alternatively, you can substitute with a known good unit - if you've got a friend with the same engine in any of a variety of PSA cars then swap it on and see what happens - I proved failure of the MAF on our Picasso by borrowing the one from the Xantia - not a 100% fit, but enough to know it was faulty.

Having unlugged the MAF sensor, the car ran better so I ordered a replacement from Eurospares recently and fitted it. I also added some Redex to to half a tank of BP Ultimate. I have a feeling too many short journeys on Sainsbury's diesel may have gunked things up. Mrs TMWNN took the car from Essex to Cumbria over half term so hopefully its cleared the tubes a bit.
