My daughter's otherwise trusty Puma is showing its ABS and traction control lights, despite having been given a clear bill of health on both counts (by National Tyre, admittedly).
I haven't tried it myself yet, but I guess it would easy enough to establish if the mechanisms were working, which would leave the behaviour of the lights, e.g. a broken wire down by the brake sensor. Any other thoughts welcome...

Alternator is a possibility, as low voltage + spikes can cause it.
Abs and traction control use the same sensors, so they are a favourite.

Thanks, Zero. I expect the battery's a bit tired by now, too!

With the warning lights on,there is most definitely a problem. The garage suggestion of a "clean bill of health" is absolute rubbish. As previously posted, more than likely to be a speed sensor fault.Usually a front on these.(one at each wheel)hth
|
Easy test with a multimeter.
Unplug one front sensor from the main harness : connections usually inside engine compartment. Probe the wheels ends. Rotate wheel. Set meter to resistance
Zero reading means sensor has failed.
Infinite reading means broken wire.
Correct reading a few hundred micro ohms.
Usually the passenger side front goes due to much and water.
Of course, the driveshaft ring can corrode: odd readings...

>Correct reading a few hundred micro ohms.
micro ohms?
Usually somewhere around 1k ohms is normal but it's easy enough to check another sensor to compare.

You do not indicate when the Fail lights come on.
Either a static 'self' test on ignition ON
or
a problem detected when running.
Is it permanent or intermittent?
Add to possible causes a broken toothed ring (not sure how Ford do it) which is responsible for inducing the voltage in the sensor coil. Could be corrosion on toothed ring?
Some cars allow you to change the ring others require a complete drive shaft or hub!

The system on our mk5 Fiesta Zetec-S used to do a "self-test" the first time the car reached about 10 mph after an engine start. This would consist of a slight "buzz" which could be felt briefly through the pedal box.
It would be good to know if this warning light comes on when driving, and if so is it shortly after pulling away?
