Volkswagen - LT Van 02 2.5 Not Starting - ToMoCo

VW LT van - 2.5 diesel. 140k

Dash lights up as normal, turn key to start and just a click from the starter.

Likely to just need a new starter motor or anything else I can try? Could it possibly an immobiliser problem?

Disconnect battery terminals, clean well and replace.

Will give it a try. 12.4 something volts at battery, which I think is good?

That's ok. Clean terminals as suggested, if still no go then check terminal connections on engine and starter, especially earth points. It then comes to either starter jammed in mesh with ring gear or starter motor/solenoid problem. With ignition OFF, put van in gear and rock it back and forward a few times. If starter is jammed in mesh this usually frees it.

If the click is from the starter I can't see it being an immobiliser problem.

I would put it in gear and roll the van a foot or so to align another part of the starter ring and try again.

Edit. must learn to think and type faster!

It could just need the starter motor taken off, cleaned and replaced if it is getting clogged up with the dust from a disintegrating DMF.

Rocking it in gear has done the trick.

New starter getting fitted tomorrow as it's setting off for Germany on Monday.
