Hi first time on site.
I have a ford escort 55d 1991 and I think the clutch is on its way out. would I have to drop the engine to replace it or could it be done with engine in place ?
I would appreciate any help.

They don't make 'em like this any more.Engine stays put and the gearbox drops out.Probably one of the easiest fwd cars to do a clutch.Just make sure the clutch release fork is not broken.hth

Apart from the Vauxhall's of this age and earlier. 40 to 50 mins with a tea break apparently. Can do it with the engine and gearbox still connected together.
Inspection plate off, fit lock clips to existing clutch, unlock shaft from the end of the gearbox, pull clutch out. Insert new one and refit shaft and remove lock clips from new clutch - or something like that.

Exactly like that :) Did it on the F20 box in the 16V. Easy peasy.

BMC 2.2 six cylinder took around 20minutes to change a clutch the same car with a 1.8 4 cylinder took two days.

im sure manufactureres could make a clutch kit that simply pulled out when worn and a new one inserted say on a drum cartridge , its not like clutches are complicated...they must have the same amount of moving parts as a door hinge? but that would be too easy........

I'm sure they could. But if a clutch lasts 150,000 miles, who cares? Most cars probably never need a new clutch these days.

Have you ever tried replacing a car door hinge?
