Nice red MGB roadster on the antiques road trip everyday this week c5.10pm, in fact its very nice.
Of course to the discerning eye (like mine) its acually an MGC.

>> this week c5.10pm,
My tv guide says it's on BBC2 at 5.15pm
|
I'm in the far infra West, the sun sets later here so there is a time difference due to the perpendicularity of the Doppler effect on the azimuth.
|
>> so there is a time difference
What's the explanation for the channel difference ;)
|
Oh sorry DD (you know I write in code) c5.10pm was meant as circa 5.10pm.
:)

Looks like your claws could do with a trim.

Just wallowed - with a nice G&T - in an hour and a half or so of kitsch, but tuneful, nostalgia.
"High Society", with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra & Grace Kelly.
Make you realise your age when you remember you saw it in a cinema on its first release!

I know it's the DM, but really:
www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2105141/Brit-Awards-2012-Winner-Adeles-vulgar-gesture-ocean-booze.html
All the things they criticize (some of which might even be true) are exactly what makes it such an entertaining programme; thank goodness it's not the Grammys! Makes you proud to be British. God save the Queen.

New series starting on BBC1 Monday 9pm:
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00p1388
"Empire is a major five-part series presented by Jeremy Paxman. It tells the story of the British Empire in a new way, tracing not only the rise and fall of the empire but also the complex effects of the empire on the modern world – political, technological and social – and on Britain."
Saw the trailer earlier and thought it might be worth watching, and of interest to certain members of this forum; AC?
|
Just watched the first one (i think) presented by Paxman, enjoyable but not too sure of the slant he puts on it, he's condensing years of history and developments into minutes of airtime, worth wtaching again if you missed it.
If the program encourages people to find out what happened via independent unbiased sources then that will be a good thing, might help combat some of the rather one sided views held about the British Empire with all its faults..
I've series linked it so i don't miss the rest, not often i do that with BBC programs now
edit, just seen your post above Focus, did you see it?

>> edit, just seen your post above Focus, did you see it?
Er, sort of. Had been catching up on something else (the Trevor Eve Kidnap/Ransom drama) so didn't remember it was on until about 9.20. Then I'd been up since 5.30, and I'm still recovering from a chest infection which kept me at home all last week, and the chair was so comfortable zzzz.... :(
|
Yes, we have been watching Empire (likewise She-Wolves). Jeremy Paxman does a sound, intelligent job as one would expect. The series is fairly comprehensive, a bit patchy and a bit thin and superficial on the level of analysis. Of course that is inevitable given the geographical and historical scale of the subject. What we get is a brisk trot through the main events rather than a meticulous reconstruction of everything.
There's a problem with programmes of this sort for a large, popular audience. A proper, po-faced historical account risks offending the young and ignorant by seeming complacent or even triumphalist about the imperialist past of this country. Paxman's solution is to kowtow somewhat to modern PC attitudes. I think he gets away with it, just.
|
Very good and watch it. I think episode 2 is on Ch4 on Sunday at 9pm.
I look forward to season 2.
|
We watched in on 4OD - primitive picture quality but it ran without a hitch. (See iPlayer thread.)
Enjoyable stuff if you force yourself to ignore the plot holes. Biggest one is that a high-profile returning PoW would get to surprise his own wife with the news he was still alive, and then be thrown back into everyday life without a family liaison officer in sight. Worth a second go anyway, which makes it better than Pan Am.
|
I agree there are plot holes but I thought the series was good. Note I've seen all ten episodes now.
|
Hmmm. Three may be my limit unless the dialogue improves. The is-he-bad-is-she-mad tension is fair enough but it's going to take more than that to make up for lines like "What I want is the last eight years back," and "We've just got to find a way to start over." CLUNK!
|
Still pretty good - not quite 24 but still....
|
No it's maybe not as good as some of the series of 24.... but I thought it was good. The initial episode was perhaps best in many ways because it was the pilot for the series. I wasn't disappointed in the rest of the series. But that's just my opinion.
|
>>I agree there are plot holes but I thought the series was good.
Same thoughts here, although I've got a bit of catching up to do.
If I was him I would be looking for a bit of backdated promotion after eight years in a cell.
|
>> Still pretty good - not quite 24 but still....
Great finale last night. I wonder if they had a more conclusive ending lined up in case the ratings didn't warrant a second series? Anyway, I'm glad there's another one to look forward to.
We're also working our way through the last series (#8) of 24 at the moment - just reached the last disc (of 6). Both excellent, but different - with 24 you've usually got a fairly good idea of what Jack's going to do next, and it ain't exactly subtle. Homeland did keep you guessing a bit more.
|
Lewis played a blinder in it - well acted. Season 2 coming up is there ?
|
Season 2 is due to premier in the states in September.
|
Something to look forward to !
|
I watched all of these weeks ago and did say it was good. Acting was excellent I thought.
I did mention season 2 but didn't go into too much detail because it would give things away.
Trailer is on this page:
www.digitalspy.co.uk/ustv/s188/homeland/news/a380309/homeland-season-two-to-be-aired-by-channel-4.html
But it just shows clips of season 1.

>> Homeland did keep you guessing a bit more.
The Bridge (2011) on BBC4 is quite good IMO. Swedish/Danish crime drama.
|
I agree the Bridge has been excellent example of Scandinavian noir. First crime show to feature an autistic Swedish female cop. Always wears same leather trousers and jumper. Plenty of gruesome bodies. Nice twist when they tried to pick up the first victim on the bridge.
|
The Killing and the Killing 2 are good. So was Borgen series one. Got series two to watch.
Not so sure about Those that Kill. Watched a few but not watched all we have recorded.
Is the Swedish female cop autistic? She's something but hadn't categorised her as that but I am no psych.
|
Is the Swedish female cop autistic?
Certainly lacks social skills and ability to empathise - at the lower end of the scale I think.
|
Have only recently started watching it (from the start of the latest series.)
Jake Humphrey's looked well out of his comfort zone. I guess he was probably only on there to promote the 2012 F1 season. Thought TG and being the SIARPC would have been more up his street.

I find the show puerile - a great big 9-yr-old schoolboy smutfest.
|
Very puerile, and regular viewing for me and Mrs F. This weeks wasn't a classic (unlike the Christmas special with Ant & Dec) - Emma Bunton was ok, but it really needs Holly Willoughbooby for it to fire on all cylinders. Not keen on the new Chinese whispers type game either; clearly they aren't lip-reading so it strikes me as a bit fake. Still very good though.
|
Classic moment last night - in the regular Keith vs. Jedward slot, challenge this week was a back-to-back race ie. like a three legged race but back-to-back instead of side-by-side. Obviously 2 of Jedward so they're ok but Keith needed a partner so he rang up his 'friend', who turns out to be Linford Christie.
So you have the slightly surreal sight of ex-Olympic gold medallist Christie effectively dragging Keith Lemon along a running track, alongside Jedward (who won).
Keith to Linford - "Is this the highlight of your career?"
:)
|
>> So you have the slightly surreal sight of ex-Olympic gold medallist Christie effectively dragging Keith Lemon along a running track, alongside Jedward (who won).
Did they lose because Keith stopped to look at Christie's lunchbox, or perhaps thought he was in a relay race because Christie had brought his own baton along?
in keeping with KL's smut level I hope you understand

Yes, a three way clash tonight at 9pm.
BBC1 Paxo with his programme about Empire.
BBC2 The Tube, all about the London Underground. I enjoyed this last week on a number of different levels.
ITV1 Whitechapel cheerful nonsense about a series of murders. I find it v. watchable.
I expect this household will record Whitechapel, so that we can watch it later and whiz through the ads. I will watch The Tube and Lady Duncan will watch Paxo. Everybody happy (almost).
|
Worth remembering that there's an ITV+1 channel on freeview (33).
|
>>so that we can watch it later and whiz through the ads.
That's exactly what we do. Although 'later' might be several weeks.
|
>> Worth remembering that there's an ITV+1 channel on freeview (33).
And on Sky - Ch 131
|
If you've got a plus box then just record two of them together and watch the other.
I've set the Adrian Edmondson series to record. I'm not keen on him but the prog is enjoyable.
I'll watch it when SWM's finished with Whitechapel and gone to bed.
Ted

>> If you've got a plus box then just record two of them together and watch

Do you mean Sky Plus?
If so, then you can't watch a third program while recording two others.
You can only watch either one of the two programs being recorded.
You can watch an already recorded program while recording two others.
You can watch one program while recording another.

How much is all that then?

Expensive-looking TV reprise by Mark Evans of his brilliant Bleak Expectations for R4. Some of the same jokes (such as tonight's Cockney company for money) but they seem thinner (the boarding school is now St Nasty's rather than St b******'s) and there's much longer between them.
Bleak Expectations is on 4 Extra and iPlayer if you want to hear how much better it used to be.
|
Much preferred the radio program, somehow more subtle and involving that the TV version, and Geoffrey Whitehead has been one of my favourite actors for a long time
|
Radio = Theatre for the mind
TV = Theatre for the mindless...

No, not Lewis this time. A documentary following his disabled brother (Nic) as he embarks on a career in motor racing.

settled down for three quarters of an hour on the treadmill at the gym this morning to find myself in front of a screen showing something called 'May the best House Win' - its very transmission was a waste of electricity - for the sake of a £1000 prize, three housewives and a male florist visit each others houses and bitch about them, and one of the women, presumably with the complicity of the director, managed to heave her boobs into close-up every 90 seconds.
And one woman had a mirror on the ceiling and a copy of 'porn for women' by the bedside. Hmmm - has BBD gone in to TV directing ?

About the Vulcan attacks on the Falklands in 1982. Longest bombing raid in history at the time, these 5 raids had doubtful military significance but it proved a point that the Bulldog's teeth could still muster a bite. Remarkable story of shoestringing something together in a very British way and a fine swan-song for the Vulcan in many ways..
Sunday 8.00pm on C4

Thanks for that, PVR set!
|
Falklands prog on 5 tonight! - showing the sides of the war that the politicians didn`t. Very good it was too!
|
good find! - bookmarked to watch again in my quiet time!
|
Very good and well made documentary - remarkable British understatement, outstanding airman-ship all done with a bit of chewing gum and a sandwich bag.
|
Excellent programme on BBC 2 9pm last Sunday, first of 4 parts SFAIK. The enjoyment was increased by it not being introduced by Neil Oliver AND no intrusive music 5*s all round
|
Funny how different programmes appeal to different people. I'd have put Orbit down not only as the worst programme I've seen this year, but up there with one of the worst ever, for me.
Mind you, I enjoyed that Hairy Bikers Bakeation thing last night so who am I to judge.
|
As a non-Sky subscriber, I'm currently spending a very frustrating few minutes on-line, with the BBC 5 Live commentary on, reading the text on the BBC website. Was hoping to find a free live streaming feed to see the pictures, with the BBC providing the commentary. However, all I've succeeded in doing is downloading a load of nonsense 'toolbars' and adverts! No live video feed yet!!
Has anybody found a decent free site that I can watch the race on tomorrow please?
|
Persevere mr moo, they are out there, I am currently watching a timeshfifted stream of Sky sports coverage Session 3 just starting. But I cant post the link here in case!
Seems in the move from BBC to Sky Coulthard has become Hill
|
try googling something like eplsite and looking under the first hit! ;-)
|
Except the person streaming it switched to Sky Sports 2 (football) halfway through!
Plenty of others tho.
|
Why did Sky get all the rights to show F1 racing? I know money money.Sick of it.
|

I found a multi multi sports channel but was initially having problems but tried Firefox and all was sorted.
I had the choice of BBC live ( quite unexpected) or Sky
As Zero says - they are out there.

Madness on Wheels: Rallying's Craziest Years
How rallying's unregulated mayhem ended in 1986 after a series of horrific tragedies.
Don't miss it.
It will be repeated if you've missed it and want to record it.
|
I think its a repeat from a few years back the - Groub B rally cars I assume. Its well worth another look, more than worth another look in fact.
Thanks.
|
Nice one! Really lost the thread of the WRC on TV for a couple of years now.
|
Looks like it'll be iPlayerable... Which is good as I don't have a working recorder at the moment.
Was rather daft even for spectators who didn't stand in crazy places. One year following the RAC I drove 1000 miles in 3 days (mostly on minor roads), caught 3 stages per day/night and had about 8 hours sleep in the whole period. Saw Tony Pond make the infamous wrong tyre choice and throw a possible win away.
The group B cars were mindbogglingly quick, not that they were slow round bends but the acceleration on the loose was shattering. On one stage which we saw from above, the cars looked like they teleporting between the bends they were that quick.
|
Thanks, recorder set up, I will be on compulsory Silent Witness. Hmmm, Emilia Fox, maybe not too bad after all. :-)
|
Yeah, my wife is a fan of any of these programmes about cutting up dead bodies, murders, serial killers etc.
I worry about her sometimes...

>> Yeah, my wife is a fan of any of these programmes..
Mrs K has had an interest in serial killers for years. She has a bookcase full of the gory details of crimes committed by the likes of Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy and Ken McDuff. I had to stop reading one of her books, The Encyclopedia of Murder, when I got to a guy called Albert Fish.

Its a good time o'the year for constructing that patio you always promised yourself.
|
As well as the cars what I found interesting was the the observation of the human condition - the drivers' comments were on the lines of ..... yeah, a few people, a few good friends got killed but hey it was adrenaline filled, we loved it and it was the best time of our lives.
|
Indeed a good watch with the overview of the drivers perspectives. A collection of clips which have done the rounds and in my collection but also some stuff I haven't seen. My heros have aged, but haven't we all.
There is some really good footage out there going back even further in time which would make some good viewing for the populus particularly in the development of individual drivers, marques or events. Perhaps one day we may see those televised as well.
|
Re run tonight 20.00hrs if you missed it. BBC 4.
|
Finally got to watch it (been on my Sky Box since it was broadcast) not quite faithful to the book - but I guess they had to condense. The battlefield scenes were beautifully rendered and the producers resisted the temptation to portray the Somme as a quagmire and stuck to the facts of the time and location (hot sunny weather and dry chalky soil !). Had some issues with the headgear worn but a small price to pay ! Worth grabbing it if you get the chance to cop it on a repeat.
|
Just watched the two parter (first of the new series) back to back.
Do they deliberately have similar looking actors just to further muddy the waters for the viewer?
I'm not much of a telly watcher, but I do enjoy that show, but you couldn't have guessed the outcome...
|
Too arty-farty production values for me - I turned it off after 30 minutes of part1.
|
When Amanda Burton left, I lost interest. Been parodied on some comedy sketch show, very cleverly....I've known some real world Pathologists and doubt they run around "detecting stuff" like these people do
|
>>doubt they run around "detecting stuff" like these people do
Thats exactly what I thought about "Quincy" years ago! - he was a Pathologist not a Police Detective! - Rubbish!
|
I watched Silent Witness for a while, but soon got bored with it.
|
Well, they did seem to have more than their fair share.
|
I watched it with herself who likes it. I used to take myself elsewhere when Amanda Burton was in it, her permanently angry acting never seemed to go with the words somehow.
It's more watchable now, even if Leo is not the full shilling and Harry is a bit too much of a loose cannon.
The first half hour that Roger saw a bit annoying though. I kept wishing somebody would put some lights on so I could see what was happening. I was on the point of trying to adjust the TV picture and actually checked some other channels to make sure it was working properly.
|
Sign of the times - budget cuts have hit the lighting departments....the ones I watched were very dark as well.......I had a soft spot for Heather Haversham in Brookie hence the Amanda attraction. Imagine Robert Peston in the lead role......you'd have to extend the programme by an hour.
|

The slog-fest that is Indian DLF Premier League (= Twenty20) cricket is currently being shown on ITV4 until 8pm; they show least a couple of games IIRC. Don't know when the season started, or how long it lasts.
Run rates can be over 12 an over - test match cricket it ain't :)

Bearing in mind the recent discussions on here.
|
It's on at 22.30, a program about Stalin is on at 2100. Watching the show on now; Bullets, Boots and Bandages talks of the less well known supply food and rear area issues. For example 25% of all hospitalisation of troops in WW1 were for STIs!
|
I tuned into that as well - fascinating. Typo on the timing, thanks
|
Yeah I quite like that sort of thing the less well known but important part of the military machine.
|
10.00pm tonight BBCHD Channel- Watched the original on BBC Wales last week. Very good programme - I've met two of the participants professionally - no clue they were anywhere near the Falklands..worth a watch.
|
Just caught up with the first of the new series of Beautiful Minds, BBC4, still on iplayer.
Jenny Clack and her tetrapods this time. Sounds weird but actually really good tv - human interest and 300 million year old earbones all in one. Who could ask for more?

The usually insufferable Chris Tarrant talking about his dad (a war hero) seems like a good programme.

Anne Widdecombe and Quentin Wilson on tonight's edition...
|
A fascinating programme on BBC Radio 4 yesterday (Monday) afternoon.
It was a dramatisation of the letters exchanged between Arthur Lowe and John le Mesurier. Lots of insights into the various characters in this show, which achieved viewing figures of 21 million at one point.
Arthur Lowe really was just as pompous as the character he played. Well worth a listen.
It should be available on BBC iPlayer here:-
