 TV thread - Vol 1 - Focusless

***** This thread is now closed, please CLICK HERE to go to Volume 2 *****

As alluded to here:
www.car4play.com/forum/post/index.htm?t=9556&m=213139&v=e

How about a thread along the lines of the 'bargains' and 'unusual sightings' threads for discussion of miscellaneous TV programmes?

Obviously some programmes such as Top Gear will have their own thread, but I've quite often felt like discussing something watched last night but felt it's not worth starting a whole new thread for.

?

I think Corrie has got quite boring. We used to watch it regularly, but haven't tuned in for the last few months.

We'll try again if and when the humour returns.

Quite an interesting programme about the work of Coroners that I just caught the last 10 mins of!

I thought that looked interesting to and was going to watch it, but Mrs F decided otherwise and starting watching a recording of an earlier 'Escape to the country'. So I went to bed :)

Try using Twitter whilst the programme's on. It's like watching TV with 500 sharp-witted experts on the subject in the room with you - some of the comments are priceless.

Many programmes now advertise a hashtag at the start to promote discussion and comment (e.g. #BBCHIGNFY, #BBCF1), but often a different, more intuitive and easier to type hashtag surfaces for the duration of the programme (e.g. #F1, #BBC3) which is where the more pithy comments can be found.

Signed up for an account but haven't 'got into' it; doesn't appeal from what I've seen. Probably an age thing :)

However I can see how it would be good for doing what you suggest, but surely that's only for certain types of programme. Eg. for dramas I like to try to immerse myself in what's going on on the screen - to start tweeting about it would destroy the enjoyment.

Not sure how much choice you got. Many years I worked in an office where we employed a guy as a filing clerk. He was very small, just over 5 foot. He had been a rear gunner in a Lancaster, selected because of his size. Didn't like to talk about it much. Lost a lot of mates

SWMBO's favourite uncle swerved as a Sgt. flight engineer in bombers. He was lost, with all his crew, in 1944.
We visited the war grave where he was buried in Picardy, on one of our road trips from Spain to the UK and it was quite emotional.
At 34 he was one of the oldest RAF crew in the nice little area just off a regular French churchyard.
Most of the men, from his aircraft and obviously several others, were in late teens or very early twenties.
SWMBO will NEVER forgive the Germans and to this day felt very uncomfortable on our trip to see our family in Gutersloh, BAOR.

SWMBO will NEVER forgive the Germans

I can understand that - but lack of forgiveness is what causes a lot of problems between people. It was a lifetime ago and many innocents suffered on both sides. One of the most powerful philosophies is to forgive enemies.

 TV thread - Dutchie
I agree Rob you can't live a live with hatred.Plenty of German women and children got killed in WW2.

My mother couldn't forgive .The last ten years of her live a German lady used to clean her house for her. They became best friends live is strange.

>Just watched Bomber Boys..

My Dad served in Bomber Command after WWII.

He was based in Heidelberg with the USAAF in a joint operation to locate, recover and identify the bodies of downed allied aircrew throughout Europe. He would talk about his off-duty times but refused point blank to go into any detail about his work. Not something you'd want to remember I suspect. When the Soviets began their blockade he was transferred to Berlin for airlift operations.

He used to get quite annoyed by the lack of recognition given to the dangers that bomber crews faced and the sacrifices they made. The vilification of Arthur Harris, once his job was done, didn't go down too well either.

 TV thread - R.P.
Just read a very good book from a soldier's perspective about the Russian campaign. It was acknowledged in that book that the bombing of Dresden was a necessity. The Russian advance was stalling and arguably it was the "right" thing to do, it was a major hub for German troops, unfortunately there were thousands of German refugees there as well...dunno myself though.

 TV thread - Dutchie
There are a few videos about Dresden. Not nice to watch well over 300000 people killed.

 TV thread - Armel Coussine
>> War what's the answer.

Er... peace?

Easier said than done though my old Batavian... and to tell the truth I find excessive use of the word and concept 'peace' more than a little annoying.

Perhaps because war seems the norm to me. Peace resulted in austerity and continued sweet rationing. Then later on people used 'peace' in a slippery way to mean left wing or even Stalinizing. Although that was more or less my chosen side I still found that ideological use of the word annoying.

Perverse of me no doubt. Bourgeois. You can't make revolution with people like me.

 TV thread - Dutchie
True A.C Peace I like that word Bourgeois, but the Bourgeois decides what happens.

 TV thread - Dog
I'm quite fond of the German people and have appreciated their friendliness and hospitality first hand in their homes and eaten at their tables - including in the former GDR but, in 39-45 they were the enemy and did their utmost to kill my mother and her 4 babies in Bermondsey S.E. London during the blitz, so, I have no negative feelings towards what happened in Dresden, Lubeck, Hamburg, Hannover etc., etc., - we were at war, dreadful things happen in war
(see WW1) lest we forget.

 TV thread - Focusless
>> (see WW1)

Speaking of which, anyone else watch Birdsong? Quite stylish with lots of staring meaningfully into space, but very enjoyable. The WW1 battlefield scenes were moving.

 TV thread - CGNorwich
Yes it was good. Far better than the melodramatic "Warhorse" which I finally got round to see last week. The book as is usually the case is even better, especially the descriptive scenes of fighting in the tunnels which brings home the sheer claustrophobic terror of the situation. Well worth a read if you haven't already

 TV thread - Focusless
Reminder of more of the terror in a DM report today (non-contentious hopefully, good photos):

Yes, I saw that article earlier - amazing!

As y'all know I watched 18 hours of WW1 on DVD over the xmas period, and some of the bombs the BEF lobbed over to The Bosch were absolutely HUGE!

 TV thread - Zero
Nowwhere near as big as the bombs they planted UNDER the bosch.

Battle of Messines On 7 June 1917, nineteen (of a planned twenty-one) huge mines, containing a total of over 455 t (1,000,000 lb) of ammonal explosives, were set off beneath German lines on the Messines-Wytschaete ridge. The explosion, which killed about 10,000 Germans, was heard as far away as London and Dublin. While determining the power of explosions is difficult, this was probably the largest planned explosion in history until the 1945 Trinity atomic weapon test, and the largest non-nuclear planned explosion until the 1947 British Heligoland detonation (below). The Messines mines detonation killed more people than any other non-nuclear man-made explosion in history.

It rattled the windows in the houses of parliament in london apparently.

The explosion set off on the Somme was so loud it was heard in London. Dog can I recommend a cracking film ?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beneath_Hill_60

Hill 60 is in Ypres. This is a fictionalized account of a true event. I've been there - a stunning piece of engineering. I've been there a couple of time, as a complete juxtaposition of events there's a road sign there with bullet holes from WW2. We'll never learn will we ?

 TV thread - Dog
I'll have to check that film out then Rob.

I call my brother in Kent the war correspondent because he has studied both wars for at least 35 years and has many books/ films etc., etc.,
I shall test him when he phones me tomorrow, on Hill 60 in Ypres.

I take it you've been to The Imperial War Museum in London?

 TV thread - Zero
i can vouch for "beneath Hill 60" a damn fine film, not your World at War type thing, more based on the personal drama.

A good film about WW1 stupidity is the classic Kirk Douglas 1959, film Paths of Glory.

I have the Martian Chronicles on DVD too, and it's awful strange. There's no middle ground with it - you'll either be captivated by it in all its tawdry ridiculousness or be bored witless.

Me, I love it. I also love the original Solaris in Russian, especially, and I mean especially, the extended silent "view from the car whilst on the motorway" sequence. I think I'll watch it again the next time I have three hours spare.

It was on TV once. BBC2, Saturday night in "World Cinema", in about 1974. Formative series for my cinematic taste.

I cant really say just what it is I see in it, but for me it isn't just American low budget rubbish - its for real, almost.

I'll have to check out Solaris to see if its 'for me'.

Be sorry, be very sorry, if you have just missed the best hour of TV this year!

On BBC4 tonight, a whole hour - "Sinatra Sings".

Sublime stuff from the greatest popular singer of the 20th Century.
A wonderful sense of phrasing of some of the very best ballads and swinging songs, backed by the absolute artistry of some of the greatest big bands ever heard.
Nothing before or since has ever bettered these performances.

Superlatives from your resident miserable old git?

You bet!

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0192r0w/Sinatra_Sings/

Great footage of him recording 'it was a very good year' in the studio, with full orchestra. Mrs F was commenting on how good it would be to a member of his band. Listening to the clarinet solo, I was imagining playing that and making a squeak - 'Sorry Mr Sinatra, sorry orchestra - can we take that again from the top?' Not a job for the faint-hearted.

EDIT: studio footage at 9:30 on iPlayer

I watched it last night - first episode was promising. Also seen episode two as well.

It's based on an Israeli programme - that makes sense as the Americans often need to copy ideas. Take the Killing for example (Danish version).

So two programmes/series I rate as well:

- The Killing Series 1 (20 episodes) and Series 2
- Borgen Series 1

Both Danish.

Good song isn't it (Rolling in the Deep)? I often have the local ILR station on when I'm working at home 2 days a week - for the dog so it's not too quiet - and get to hear it quite a lot (they alternate between Adele and Bruno Mars). Still not tired of it. I think the arrangements are good, not over-produced.

Not wanting to monopolise this thread but I thought Bruno Mars's performance was top notch. I'm not a big fan of his singles - they're clever and catchy but they don't grab me; too 'clinical'? - but he clearly knows what he's doing on stage. Very impressive.

Thought Blur did a good set as well. Their acceptance speeches need a bit of work though :)
