And here is the big blue engine on its way back tonight
www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYKgAp8c8Qs
|
Not watched the clip but is this on its way back to the York railway museum then? It wasn't there when I was there August last year - it was at Shildon.
|
No, it was on its way to Waterloo!
|
No its not.
It was definitely on the main line on its way to Waterloo tonight..
You are thinking of a different big blue engine.,
|
So the engine in the clip isn't Mallard then :-) Oops.
|
why was it an imposter? why dress an engine up and show it off as something it isn't?
|
It's not an impostor. It's just not Mallard. Both are the same model train aren't they. From Zero's video on Youtube I see they are both LNER A4 Class 4-6-2?

LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 no 60019 Bittern dressed up as "4492 Dominion of New Zealand"
Hmm im not an anorak but to me the Bittern isn't Mallard and neither are they both "4492 Dominion of New Zealand"
Sooo - why dress up bittern and try to dupe folk into thinking different?
|
Bittern has never claimed to be Mallard. Its just the same type of engine as Mallard.
Ok it is wearing a different dress at the moment, but its still looks as pretty as a picture.
|
Mallard wasnt the only A4 Pacific!
As it happens, yes the one on the clip is pretending to be something else. Still an A4 pacific, but a different one.
BR often changed engine numbers anyway.,
|
I take it it was a "double treat" trip?... return by Deltic?
|
>> I take it it was a "double treat" trip?... return by Deltic?
Nope., it was A4 steam down, and A4 steam back. The diesel was used on the way back from Weymouth to Southampton as they couldnt turn the A4 round at Weymouth.
|
Heritage railways do it all the time. They rename and number a locomotive to represent another member of the class for a particular occasion.
One of the preserved A4s has recently had it's identity changed for some reason.
I think it became ' Dominion of New Zealand ' but I'm not sure without looking in the Railway Magazive.
There's some ( conflicting ) evidence that the last locomotive built by British Railways is another of the class, as Evening Star was involved in a collision before it was withdrawn and a better one subtituted.

Yeah, Its Bittern in the clip, dressed up as Dominion of New Zealand.
Its also been known for big liners to suddenly change identity!

You want unusual trains ? You got one here !
No-one does it better than the Irish.

What a good way to get from Listowel to Ballybunion and back.
A resurrected section has been set up by enthusiasts.
Ted
|
Ted, that looks bonkers - glad you posted it! :-)
|
It was bonkers...The story is that when they took a pig to market, say 2cwt, they had to balance the wagon with 2Xi CWT sacks on the other side then bring them back, 1 sack on each side.
Only the Irish...............
Although to be fair, they were used in other places. Google ' Lartigue monorail ' .

Fabulous clip Zero. I couldn't read its name though. Was Sir Nigel Gresley a Mallard class? There weren't many of them.
Sounded good too. A bit sad, having to have a modern loco at the other end just in case...
|
>> Fabulous clip Zero. I couldn't read its name though.
It was named "Dominion of New Zealand" Light was poor so not surprised it wasn't visible
Was Sir Nigel Gresley a Mallard
>> class? There weren't many of them.
Yes the A4 Pacifics (of which Mallard was one) were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, and he had one named after him. There were 34 built.
This is a good page www.lner.info/locos/A/a4.shtml
As you can see three are still capable of steam.
>>
>> Sounded good too. A bit sad, having to have a modern loco at the other
>> end just in case...
LOL, the "modern" loco is a class 33 diesel and is 40 years old! Its not there "just in case" its there because they couldn't turn the A4 round at Weymouth, so it had to haul the complete set backwards. ( some of the lesser powered steam engines need to be banked (double engined) out of Weymouth to Wareham due to a hill)
|
>>is a class 33 diesel
looks different to the 33`s on Google images, the one in the clip "seems" to have a bit of a "snout" and lacks the destination board above middle window! - I thought it was a Deltic, but looking closer it would seem to be a "one-ender"!! ;-) hey-ho what do i know?;-) maybe as you say it`s a 40year old one!
|
I haven't re-checked Z's video but it's almost certainly a class 37, still 40+ years old!
edit: yes it is a 37

All of the early English Electric designs for BR had the 'snout' at each end; classes 23, 37, 40 and 55 (Deltic) which can make them tricky to tell apart at a glance. Pushing 50 years old now, although the 23s are long gone. The next generation EE machine, DP2, had the snout, but lost it by the production run was ordered - class 50.
DP2 prototype with snout (I think it's basically a spare Deltic body)

|
Thanks for the "info" - not really into trains, but i always have had a "thing" for the Deltic, don`t know if it`s the looks, sounds, or both, just know i like them! - "they" just seem to "ooze" power! although they are probably not that powerful these days really. It could be these are the Diesels of my childhood , maybe thats where my affection stems from! - either way, i don`t like the "50"!!
cheers
|
I think the sound of a Deltic working hard is its most distinguishing feature; in terms of power they'd still be regarded as pretty powerful by UK standards, as I pointed out in a previous discussion there comes a point where more power isn't useful because the longer/faster trains it would allow would need major infrastructure changes; wheelslip also becomes more of a problem.
|

>>
It's good that when these Diesels break down they can still send the Steamers to the rescue.
Shame about the tatty selection of non-matching coaches that the Diesel was towing.
|
As an aside, one of the A4 class, ' Sir Ralph Wedgwood ' Gained membership of an exclusive group of British steam locomotives for reasons rather contrasting with the fame of ' Mallard '.
' Sir Ralph ' was destroyed in the Baedecker bombing raid on York in 1942 by the Luftwaffe.
The engine became the first of it's class to be withdrawn, the others lasting into the 1960s.

Unusual Planes trains, and BOATS!
Went sailing with friends today, Southampton water was completely devoid of any big shipping, HMS Illustrious! Took some pics of a Merlin landing on deck, and then got close enough to snap the armed security watch walking around on deck.

'I don't like the look of that boat on the starboard quarter, No 1. Just discreetly prime the port side Gatling batteries as a precaution, would you? You can't be too careful in these waters.'
Glad you got away with it Zero, but you should have passed by here on the way home. The Calva is nearly finished. Those thimblefuls mount up.
Come to think of it it's just as well you didn't. It's utter chaos here this weekend. I am working at the moment, but they'll be back any minute.

This was posted to my Facebook page today. A remarkable piece of film, not least the remarkable quality. The buildings depicted are still in existence - wonder what became of the guys in this film ? Some, no doubt, died in the Great War, which was heading headlong towards the country when this was filmed. I ended up, last summer, in a gite on the Somme, a small village called L'Amartinierre Courcelles-au-Bois, there were two graves for Pwllheli soldiers in its tiny CWGC graveyard.....makes you wonder. Check out the guy with the iPAD - time traveller ?

That's by Coxes Lock Mill.
So what's the story then Z? Why is Bittern dresed up as Dominion of New Zealand? If dressed up at all then why not as the more famour Mallard I wonder?
And why are they, Bittern, Brittania etc all hanging around Addlestone?

>> That's by Coxes Lock Mill.
It is indeed. Combined dog walk and train spotting followed by a cuppucino and cinnamon swirl pastry in a nearby cafe. What could be better on a hot summer morning while the great unwashed have to work!

Well not as Mallard because Mallard still survives and is on display (tho not steaming)
Sir Nigel Gresley is still steaming, so you cant use that.
No-one remembers "Bittern" it has no special history or records, so why not dress her up as other engines and keep the names alive, at one time she was masquerading as No. 2509 Silver Link, one of the first four "Silver A4's"
|
Thanks Z, though the fact that Mallard has not steamed sice the 80's is a good reason for Bittern to masquerade as her I would think.
And why are they all in your manor?
|
>>
>> Thanks Z, though the fact that Mallard has not steamed sice the 80's is a

>>
>> And why are they all in your manor?
A combination of factors.
1/ There is a problem sending steam engines on the down line between Waterloo and Surbiton (gauging problem?) so any Waterloo down steam trains going to the Dorset coast have to come round the Addlestone link.
2/ Any Paddington/Victoria down to the Dorset coast has to come round the Addlestone link.
I am within 10 minutes of 3 return steam journeys a week.

Well bigT its just that I have som many rocking past me in a week, it seems a shame not to toddle out and see them. Its not as tho I have to travel miles to go and see them.
And the need to be worthy of it! I shant be getting out of bed to see Tangmere or Clan line for example.
We should be getting Tornado round before the end of the year, and the one and only Class 8, ever built.

Again, fabulous Zeddo. That's what trains used to look like, if you were really lucky.
|
No brake van?
And why the higgledy piggledy colection of coaches.
|
yes I hate the motley collection of carriages.
NO brake van needed, the carriages are braked.
|
You do some nice videos zero watched your others too & what camera are you using?
Got panasonic sdr-H101 last month playing with it took it to work for father inlaw who likes his trains so did a tour around one and under it, have to work out how to post on you tube.
|
Its the new Fuji HS10
The zoom ring is a bit sticky, but freeing up with use.
|
>> I hate the motley collection of carriages.
I don't, I like it. Because trains often used to be like hat in the days of steam.
And I can't be bothered to look again, but there's almost certain to be a guard's van (brake van indeed! An Americanism) in one of the rear carriages. It wasn't always at the very back of the train.

Not been on the forum a lot 'cos my PC has been undergoing therapy at the excellent Dr. Rattle's convalescent home.
The story behind the transformation of Bittern into DoNZ came about after a visit to by the loco Southall MPD. The chief engineer, Roland Kennington had noticed some stainless steel trim items from an A4 dumped in Carnforth MPD many years ago and had had the foresight to measure them.
He remarked to Bittern's owner that it would be great to see one of the 5 ' Commonwealth ' A4s in service in original condition. Bittern's owner, Jeremy Hosking, suggested that Bittern be used with the proviso that it would revert to ' Bittern ' condition at it's next re-paint in 12/2012.
The engine was to be presented as DoNZ in 'as new' 1938 condition with blue valances, dark red wheels and stainless steel trim. DoNZ was chosen as this loco had been based, from new, at King's Cross and had made 50 consecutive runs with the Coronation service without any problems.
The new nameplates were so big that they had to be cast in two pieces and the weight of 47 Kgs gave some fixing problems. The work was completed just in time for the unveiling on April 16th at King's Cross by the NZ High Commissioner, Derek Leask.
Mr Leask took the opportunity to thank the British people for their help in connection with the recent earthquake.
Thousands of people turned out along the ECML to witness the first run along the line of a ' valanced' A4 since Mallard in the 1980s. A second tender was provided to increase water capacity and was painted blue with the LNER coat of arms. The loco carried the NZ coat of arms on the cabsides.

Been having a bit of a trainspotting week really; Tuesday went down to Weymouth to see mum, forgot there was a special running, also forgot my camera. Her house pretty much backs onto the line, so here's a smoky Tangmere + Bittern/DoNZ chuffing up the hill out of Weymouth station. Filmed on my HTC Desire S CrappyCam. I'm not 8 foot tall, I'm standing on a stepladder :-)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBR-BzFujGM
Then yesterday I actually went on the 'Bath Spa Express' from Brockenhurst to Bath, behind 70000 'Britannia', as my 50th birthday treat. Filming from the train was pretty hopeless, all I achieved was smuts on the lens, still visible here as I shot the train leaving Brock. after getting orf.
Mm should be happy as the complete rake was in one colour, carmine and cream; even though the rear vehicle is 10 years+ too young to have carried that livery in normal service. Looked good though. Filmed on the TZ65 which is WVGA 30fps i.e. SD.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMVjPaEm91Q
|
>> much backs onto the line, so here's a smoky Tangmere
Yeah, Tangmere is really really smokey at the moment, it obscured the whole line behind it on one run, and had a nasty clank.
|
I noted Zed's comment about the Class 8 in his earlier post. I assume this is the Duke of Gloucester, the only one made and, happily, preserved.
I have an interest in ' one offs ' built for experiment or for a specific job. My favourite, being dyed in the wool LMS, is Big Bertha, the Lickey Banker. Built in 1919 by the Midland Railway, it spent 37 years pushing trains up Bromsgrove Bank in the Lickey Hills on the Birmingham to Bristol main line.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7c2X3x7aoI
If ever a loco should have been preserved, this was one. Her cylinders are still in the National Collection.
The Midland was a 'small engine ' company, preferring light, fast and luxurious trains at some frequency. Bertha was by far the biggest engine they ever built and was the second of only two ten-coupled engines in the country until the 1940s. She was tried out on coal trains from Toton to Brent but apart from trips to Derby for servicing spent all her time at Bromsgrove.
Some other notable one-offs were the Midland's Paget loco which spent most of it's time sheeted over in the paint shop at Derby until cut up, the big Bayer Garrett bought by the LNER for pushing trains up the Worsborough incline near Sheffield and the ten-coupled Decapod of the Great Eastern Railway, built to show steam could compete with electric on short suburban runs...which it did !
Fascinating subject for me to bore people with...all gone now but thankfully there is film of most old stuff,20th century at least. There is film of Bertha on Youtube, but it's not good quality.

For you train spotters Northern rail is to get 22 "NEW" Trains compromising of 14 class 142 and 8x 150's so not NEW but old stock from down south who are getting new trains.
But this will keep us maintennace staff busy repairing this lot of old units and what with the price rise on tickets by 13% nobody will want to use them!!
Passenger numbers up on last year they tell us!!

I was working at home last Wednesday afternoon, heard a tremendous roar above the house and looked out to see, from below and directly behind, something with four piston engines and rounded wings and tail that can only, to my mind, have been a B-17.
Now, according to the Sally B site, theirs is the UK's only flying B-17 and it did make a visit to RAF Odiham on Wednesday before returning to its base at Duxford. A westerly takeoff from Odiham and a wide right turn to the northeast would fit with it being still quite low, with the gear up and the engines working hard, as it passed over us on the Oxon-Berks border. Amazing sound.
|
Sally B is her name and currently the only B 17 flying in europe the other one is in France but not back up yet.
This one stared in the film The Memphis Belle & still has the smoke machine fitted to the wing.

Paging Mr. Z....
Just wondered if you were out Tornado spotting this morning, apparently there was no fireman available at Victoria so she was piloted by a 'skip*' all the way to Eastleigh. Came through Hinton Admiral about 25 late, going well though.

Let me tell you a wee little tale about that...
I have been planning a nice spot for a great shot, visited it several times. Yesterday I decided to practise the shot when A4 bittern came through.. SO all lined up, shot planned, A4 turns up late and then a damn class 455 lectric comes in and stops blocking the shot. Complete washout!
Soooooooo
Tornado is due through today, first and last time this year round our way, so I rocks up at my favourite spot to be greeted by perfect even light and No down trains to get in the way ( spoke to a lady train driver driving the Up service who explained all Waterloo down was suspended due to a lorry hitting a bridge - Great news)
Set up shot, all wait patiently. We hear a sound of steam chime, and then - "What's this!!! a feint thrumming of a Diesel? Whats going on! Then the Skip appears with Tornado sandwiched behind.
Small boys crying on the platform "Dad Dad is it Broke"
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Its still Bittern only dressed up as Dominion of New Zealand!
|
Cycled to Hinton station, found that in the last 2 weeks they've decided to plant some new station nameboards half way across the platform, right in the field of view for choo-choo filming.
Ended up on the road overbridge next to the station, not ideal but not too bad when there's no direct sun. A particularly wide selection of coach colours today. sound may be a little odd due to white van man in his diesel transit idling in the middle of the bridge to watch the train, about 1m from my camcorder.

Oh dear, not a good day for steam traction.
Britannia ran out of water at Warminster on its way back to Poole from Bath this evening, stock now being hauled by a girt big diesel (59203). I'll not be going back to the station to film that choo-choo then. :-/

Poo !
Been off the forum for a week or so due to an eye operation and come back to read about foreign lines in the South !
Went to Leeds by train last Wednesday to meet the office staff. Never been before. I opted for a stopping train on the Lancashire & Yorkshire Rly main line through Todmorden and Hebden Bridge. Lovely day with the bonus of being able to grice the scenery !
No steam, but what would I have given to be behind an L & Y ' Highflyer ' 4.4.2 ! I went that way 'cos the tram from the back of our 'ouse takes me into Manchester Victoria and I can get as far as Littleborough on me travel pass. L'Boro to Leeds return was only £8.50...cheaper than the DERV I would have used.
There was a VSOE type train in the long through platform at Victoria with a DRS diesel on the end....I wonder if there was steam at the other end.....too far to see from my platform.
I noticed quite a few abandoned sidings with quite large trees growing between the rails along the line. Not seen wheels for decades. You would think some enterprising toe-rag would have had them away...considering the weight !

What a crap morning down here, chilly, heavy rain. The bed was warm and comfy, I know it's train day, but its only Tangmere, should I be bothered to get out and film it at the new spot I scouted out? Oh ok then. Moan mumble.
Glad I did. It clearly is the smokiest, noisiest, dirtiest, smelliest transport currently in motion anywhere in the UK. Spectacular in the rain, so noisy it overwhelmed the gain control on the camera mic.

I also have the Airfix, vintage fire engine, boxed and untouched. Seems a shame to make it as it's all in red plastic and really needs a good paint man to do it justice...especially the crew.
Both must be over 40 years old !
Wish I could get hold of the Airfix/Kitmaster LMS Beyer-Garrett although there is one to come out in OO, possibly, from one of the manufacturers.

She came through Hinton Admiral about 5 late, pretty much coasting down towards Christchurch, smoking well as usual. Drizzle seem to have kept most of the trainspotters at home, had the bridge to myself. Must do some hardcore map reading and find a spot near me where down trains are working uphill, must be one somewhere!

Brookwood near me seems to be a good spot, Fresh out of Woking, not stopping till Winchfield, this is the first place to make up time after the suburban crawl, so they give it some beans.

Two girls (???) I worked with came fora visit today. One has a rail mad 15yr old son and he wanted to go on the Metrolink. We all went to Manchester Victoria and had a coffee and came back.....they were very impressed with the continental atmosphere in the city centre.
Dan wanted to have a session on the layout so I let him rip....he soon got the hang of changing the trains in the loops and doing a bit of shunting. I've not used it much due to eyesight but I think I'm ok now for some wiring repairs.
Nice to have someone to share my interest although he lives in Yorkshire so can't get over too much.

I liked the first 60 seconds. The rest was a bit too much in the dark. :-)

I cut the first 4 minutes out of it! Bittern was stuck outside the station on a red light. Its actually lighter than this, but Youtube processing has lost definition.
