This is not a thread I regularly frequent, so I've just picked this up - I have to say if I were looking for a trials car I'd be after a Troll or Marlin - do they still make them ?

The Jowett seller will take £1200 without the plate....I bet he would !
He's also selling this...a lot better, and just right for Rats !

Never mind Rattle, I want it!
That's almost a carbon copy of the jalopy I used to knock around Moscow in. Same colour, spec, almost everything.
I think I'd even swap my 360 for that one.

Can't you just nip over to Russia, and drive a brand-new one back? OK, it might take some time....

Seller now trying to sell the car without the plate.
Dreamer !
He'll only get spares type money without a V5 and he can't put the number on retention without the car being taxed and tested.
Relisted now and up to just £103...more like it !

Go on Sheikha. You know you want it.

If you go clubbing in it, Ratto...you can chuck up out of the window on the way home amd no-one will notice !

Words fail me here. Can anyone justify this asking price?

"It looks EXACTLY the same as my first car, a J reg 1100 Deluxe!"
Front bumpers and wheels are different...as are seats..

Just up the road from me. Does a nice line in classics like this. Colleague had a Dino from them a few years back

Seats look pretty standard to me - no under bonnet photos, I notice!

interesting history on this rover
tinyurl.com/rover-sd1
|
Very nice that Rover - always liked those. A friend had a 2.3 a few years ago he used to use as a fishing hack. Although it was sagging at the back and never seemed to be firing on all 6 it never let us down.
Coincidentally a dealership round the corner from work has got one on their forecourt at the moment - might wander over and have a look lunchtime.
|
If that Rover is as genuine as it seems not a bad car.... but for under £2000 if it was my money. I remember about 12yrs ago selling a Granada MkII Ghia X (for around £750) and a guy turned up with a mint looking red SD1 Vitesse as in the link below. He had no cash but pleaded with me to swap my Granada for the Vitesse. No-one wanted an SD1 then so I refused.
www.v8engines.com/vehicle_sales/car_photos/red_sd1_02.jpg
|
Went over this afternoon and had a quick look - bit of an eye opener to see it up for £3k. Even if I had the money spare I'd think twice.

Much better examples around than that.

Max of a tenner, say. Hardly rare. That's how some of the far East sellers make a bit.
I bought a Chinese fighter pilots helmet, it was about £2 and the postage was £30.
I just had a yen for one !
This guy's hoping to get a fiver for it from someone who hasn't noticed the delivery charge extra.
I've sent him a question...but probably won't get a reply to it !

It's a bit minimal but on every item if you look along to the far right just above the main description it says Report Item... it's not a big flashy button thing, just the words. It takes you to a form and you get immediate email confirmation. Try it on that badge??

Just reported seller of the badge....I'll let you know the outcome, if I'm told !

''yes very special rare packing, recorded delivery''

I think the SD1 is a lovely shape, but that's not a good example for the money. I don't think the 'bracket' for the exhaust is standard!
|
From the photos that looks like one lovely SD1, history and all.
Intersting to see that the tax was £74. Whilst you couldn't tax a new V8 car for £74, tax for, say a BMW 520d is cheaper these days in real terms. No, the 520 isn't a V8 - it is quicker, smoother, etc in every way. Just no burble to go with it.
See? Motoring is cheaper in real terms these days.

So did I.
The owner of this one might not have used it much, but somebody has and given it some beans, judging by the bluing on the exhaust.

Aftermarket 2-1 pipe; never saw one without a blued exhaust, unles it was so rusty the blueing was invisible!
I had (and preferred) the short-lived 400T, along with a 250 version of the same which was my winter hack. Always thought that was a handsome bike, never cared much for the "euro" styling of the Super Dream. Very comfortable too. They've proved surprisingly long-lived, still see a lot of 250N's in daily use.
|
...never saw one without a blued exhaust...
Don't say that, I thought my blued exhaust marked me out as a real ragged edge biker. :)
|
>somebody has and
>> given it some beans, judging by the bluing on the exhaust.<
In my personal experience you had to give the 250 SD a lot more than 'some beans' if you wanted to achieve the dizzy heights of the national speed limit.
I bought a lovely one once but when I was testing it I had to stop at the top of a (not very steep hill) and go back down to do it again so I could decide if it was me or the bike that was at fault. Had to go back up at 12k rpm! I bought it anyway but three months later I turned it in for a CX.
|
...Had to go back up at 12k rpm!...
I had mine when I was 17 and it was the fastest thing I'd ever ridden.
It amazed me at the time that any engine could do 10,000rpm and more.
From memory, the output was around 26hp.
|
I had one of those to do the daily central london commute.
It was perfect for that job, nice balance at low speed and quite narrow.

I had a Kawasaki Z250... loads quicker and faster!
A mate (God rest your soul Rich) who had a 250 Super Dream, my Z left that standing no matter who was riding which!
The Z went round corners faster too..... I remember going through some local lanes with another bike behind me, I kept losing him in the twistys, he caught up on the straights...
When we pulled up to a junction, I saw it was a Super Dream, but with twin front discs......

Another friend of mine had an S1c... (early version of the KH.)
(dreams of days gone by.......)
|
>> >> The KH250 triple was the bike I dreamed of and never owned...
.... now that was one bike that definitely did NOT go round corners faster than a Super Dream!
I briefly owned the 750 version; I say briefly because I couldn't afford to run it for one thing (less than 20 mpg) and it was possibly the most lethal bike I've ever ridden in my life.
This from a guy who rides a 120mph Ironhead Sportster with a SLS drum front and back!
|
A few years ago in a village pub not far from here there was a bunch of very genial and well behaved bikers, Sussex road rats or something of the sort.
Their bikes were great looking, matt black all over, engines included. One was an evil-looking transverse 3 cylinder 2-stroke with little sheep's ear handlebars low down on the steering column.
Used to know a bloke in London who had a Vincent 1000 tourer, a long heavy bike with alloy mudguards, with handlebars like that. How he managed to drive the thing in London with a passenger - me - on the pillion was completely beyond me. In top gear with the engine idling, t'pocket t'pocket t'pocket, it rolled along at about 45 mph.

Once I sort out my house move I may realize a lifetime's dream and look for a nicely restored RD250 or 350 LC - I really have an itch that need scratching.

Yet another mate of mine still has an LC.... Stan Stevens tuned as well!
He also built a hybrid, RD250 air cooled frame, with a 350LC lump!

I once went to look at a 350 Elsie in Bridgwater (when between Hondas) and the bloke took one look at me and said 'isn't it a bit young for you mate?'
Sadly, he was right.

No, been there done that. If I'm going to have another embarrassing car in my life I already know what it will be. Mild problem of justification to be overcome but maybe one day I'll get around to some derivation of a 911... If only they had done an estate... :-)

No way mate. Back in the mid-1990's,I recall being at the late Phil Allen's shop in Nottingham one morning for an MOT; amongst the customers was an elderly gentleman in racing leathers, on a Beckett-tuned RD350 . He was then 82, and had been pulled up by a bobby for speeding a few days previously. Apparently, the bobby told him to remove his helmet and then, having confirmed his age, and been told by the old boy that he had ridden in the TT before the last war. let him off with a severe warning.
|
"a nicely restored RD250 or 350 LC"
I wish you hadn't said that, PU. I had a semi-serious plan to buy a new one and mothball it 25 years ago...
I preferred the pre-YPVS one to look at - like this:

|

My uncle had one. He still talks about the unprompted 2nd gear powerband wheelies, astronomical fuel consumption, and 700 mile spark plug life even 30 yrs later. Amazing bit of kit.
|
If I bought another classic, I might go for a CB450..Black Bomber. Just love the looks.
I had a Condor A340 for a while. Ducati SOHC motor. Gutless freak !
Cruised at 60 and refused to do any more. Tried new carb, exhaust,sprocket...nothing.
Kickstart on the nearside...could hurt you if you weren't careful. Marzocchi forks, Grimeca drums....about all in it's defence !
It did come with machine gun racks, goggles, wheel brush, lock/chain,bulbs and full tool kit. Still got the lock and chain.
Ran it on Swiss Military plates while I was sorting out registering it.
Chipped it in for a flat twin Beemer.
I think I might fettle the Velocette this Summer and put it back on the road.
It's the brakes that are the problem...5 inch drums.
You have to make arrangements in advance to stop the thing !
Ted
|
>> I think I might fettle the Velocette this Summer and put it back on the road.
Purring grey shaft-drive Noddy bike Ted?
They were notably refined and discreet but far less macho than the Triumph 650s the real bike plod had. Looked strange to see them ridden by coppers in police helmets too.
Perhaps it's the sort of classic I need for getting the paper in the morning. But I would need L plates which would be embarrassing.

It runs just fine. A battery charge/plug clean and some fresh superunleaded and I guarantee it'll start.

A handsome machine. Looks more official and serious in black somehow. Of course I did remember they were water-cooled as well. No doubt one reason why they were so quiet.
The weather protection looks good too. I'm sure new linings would make the brakes less iffy...
|
No need for L Plates here - you can have D plates if you want !
|
>> But I would need L plates which would be embarrassing.

You'd need to pass the test before you could even ride it, unfortunately.
Even the early LE's were 149cc, and the learner limit is 125.

I used to have one you could take the cylinders of and change the pistons very cheaply making into a 400cc and nobody was any the wiser and still ride it on L plates.Used to cost as much in Belray twostroke additive as the petrol did.

It wouldn't bother me about the plaques...although they're not included in the sale.
My own personal opinion of memorials is that, as in a graveyard, the person's name is being brought back to life briefly by someone just reading it. Our own nearest and dearest are remembered by photographs displayed around the house...most of them we knew, but some, like great uncle Jim, killed on the Somme, still live on in their pictures.
My own maternal G'parents have a small gravestone in a, now abandoned, churchyard not far away. It's always coming up for re-developement, being near the Trafford Centre.
I've thought for some time that if the place is flattened, then I would like the memorial stone at home safe with the family....not necessarily on display.
I don't think that's morbid...other may disagree.
Ted
