My kinda car that. We had a few of them come in as trade ins against Rover 200s back in the day. They were always bought off the company by employees, often for parents.
Back in 2000, I recall one little gem, a 1994 top of the range Favorit, less than 20k, full T&T&SH, as new, £150 to make it go away. Not bad things to drive really, they sort of plo along in a relentless but steady way.

Those Nissans were real sleepers performance wise. Much prefer one of them to an RS Turbo.

I can see why it would put you off VWs. I had a D reg 1.0 Polo C (so even slower than yours Stu) as my second car, and it put me off VWs for a long time. I have only recently returned to VAG with the Octavia - so far so good..

Ive always had a soft spot for jap hot hatches. Toyota Corolla GTi, Daihatsu Charade GTti and Suzuki Swift GTi all spring to mind. Hot hatches these days are just too heavy to be what they were originally.

Now this was good value and what looks like a decent motor. They owned it 9 years judging by the questions replies so obviously liked it, prob just run in. I think id have had a punt on this had I been looking, even if the MOT is short.

Yep, I reckon it is... there's one round the corner from us, in red too! I remember when they imported them, I phoned the guy up and asked if they had a diesel engined version... he sounded a bit peeved as it seems they could have sold 10 times as many if they were diesel powered, but were struggling with the petrol engine! Good workhorse the old Clubman D!

Oh gawd here we go... Ok, I know you know better.... But I had a CLubman D for a couple of years and 36k miles and had no problems and 55/60mpg... No doubt there were better cars around, but not many cheaper to run which was a priority at the time... That make sense, BB?!

I drove one loads that mum had new in late '75. Only a 900cc or 1043cc but a big leap forward in small car quality and refinement for the time. Super safe FWD handling despite the narrow tyres.
Ours was the 3dr hatch version... the saloon (called a Derby when introduced) was mostly unwanted even back then.

Nah, you can get a non-runner for that now. Thats prices of 3 years ago. Doesnt make much sense, but people are paying stiff money for well cared for swedish stuff. Its hwy ive not owned a Volovovo for some years. Dutch made stuff is still around for small change though.

Your right of course, but how good was it actually? For £250, you would have to assume either the owner was a tool who didnt research values, or there was something wrong with it, aside being a saloon which seems to halve the price.

A quick check on Autotrader reveals that within 60 miles of me, no car is for sale with less than 60k on the clock for less than £600. Fix my exhaust and I bet I can get £600 for the old shed. People see FSH and 47k at that price and they then look at the others with 150k and a Daewoo doesnt seem that bad :-)
Values are way above sensibility atm.

In 2000 my parents sold my mum's Volvo 244 as she was no longer able to drive it. It was a 1975/N plate, in orange, with 53,000 miles from new, absolutely mint inside and out. They tried the Classic magazines at £1295 and then £995, then the local paper at £995, £500 then £300, and finally Auto Trader again at £300.
The buyer phoned my parents at 6am on the day of publication from 200 miles away to ask for their address. 4 hours later he was on their doorstep holding the cash. He even phoned them later on to let them know the car made it "home" without incident.

I have always had a soft touch for these, even the basic ones cost £9000 in 1990 but they are pretty naff (pun intended) but by the early 2000's they could be bought for £300 with full MOT.
Once a very popular car with house wifes will soon vanish of our roads completly.

I bought a 1986 360 GLEi saloon this summer as a hobby car, and to teach myself home servicing and mechanics. I've been having a ball with it. Easy to work on, cheap parts.
It has only 36k on the clock and is essentially in concourse condition, I'm going to take it to some Volvo conventions next summer. One owner from new, always garaged, no rust. The old boy who had it before me just can't drive any more.

The thing I remember about Volvos of that era is the ladder headrests.
Don't think the Fords we had then had headrests at all, let alone gigonkerous ones like in Volvos.

No, we still have the Golf, my missus has taken that over because she likes it so much. Also swapped the Touran for a Galaxy (so that's my daily drive now), and sold the Smart Roadster (we weren't' using it enough to justify ownership costs).
The 360 is strictly a hobby for me and something to learn about mechanics and servicing on. It's not just a low mileage museum piece, the old boy who bought it new specced it with leather and aircon too, although no PAS.

That Scorpio looks fabulous. Such a shame I've a) nowhere to store it and b) need a more economical car. I used to own a 1987 2.0 Ghia Auto and rate it as one of my most favourite cars. God, I'd love that Scorpio!

i had a 1986 2ltr ghia and it was a lovely car. the trouble is i bet if we drove it again it wouldnt be anyway near as nice as we remember. i thought it was a big car at the time but its probabally about focus size now

Spot on. Until not too long ago I looked after one of these for a friend... a 2.9 V6 Ghia. Bit of an old bus by today's standards... a 2lit MkIII Mondeo for a grand would be better in all respects.
Have to admit the condition looks good though if you wanted to run it for old times sake rather than on its abilities.

I took a Granada Cosworth up to 140mph - fastest ive ever driven and it was solid as a rock. Underrated cars in many ways.
If I thought that car would be £800ish id prob go for it tbh, but I can see that being £1200-1500 if it gets some rival buyers.

They do normally go for a bit more than they ought to be worth. They've a lot of cred in the 4x4 circles. Some folks say that's all it is, just talking up a reputation, only the gullible would part with their pennies for one.
There's another school of thought that says there's some merit to such a simple machine, if something goes wrong in the middle of nowhere, you have half a chance of fixing it up and getting mobile. There's no AA call out 13 miles off the beaten track half way up a river :-)
I dunno, i've been in one going up an impossibly steep bing, then down the other side. Impressive machine to my mind.

I think id be more inclined to buy a LR tbh, I knew a guy with a Niva and them thing was never running for more than a few weeks between repairs, not to mention welding.
LR may be no more reliable, but parts easier to come buy for sure. So of course, id have a Niva in a shot :-)

Yeah i think even for that money i'd be looking for a good rangie classic. When cleaned up, looking mint they still hold that wow factor.
Even when manky they just look like they mean business. Coil springs, none of the underpowered compressor and uber delicate EAS control system as on the P38.

Ive always had a soft spot for the Series 3. Its more civilised than earlier ones but still so incredibly simple. I very nearly bought one 3 years ago and it was only really the need for a brake overhaul and the prospect of an hour on the M6 in the driving rain which put me off ( the poor brakes and the driving rain being related factors! ). It was a 1980 diesel which actually ran very well and had a long MOT.
It was just £650 which in LR terms is giveaway, fella needed the cash quick.

It has been advertised for a loooong time. I guess the running costs are a slight deterrent plus the mileage. Others with lowish mileage are £4K / £5K more so I guess it will stay unsold for a good bit longer.

Re; Volvo 340's. Had two of 'em back in the mid-90's; first one an old belt-drive automatic, bought for £250, ran it for nearly a year; one belt broke but it struggled around on the other one for a few weeks. Sold it for £100 to a nice West Indian chap who wanted the low-mileage engine.
Second one was a 1986 DL manual; loved that car, absolutely bullet-proof. Very comfortable seats, and reasonably well appointed inside in typical Volvo fashion. Not the most economical car to run as it was heavy and a bit under-powered, and they were very much seen as an old man's car.
Damn system put this out of context! :-(

Re the Phaeton, Glasgow City Council has a fleet of these, although the diesel ones, and they are not being kept on after their lease is due. So watch out for them hitting the market!
Mostly due to political pressures/cost cutting etc.
Have sat in one and it is a very impressive car, loads of space and gadgets!
